Selena?

I think I like it, but is it actually also the name of a sanitary product or horrific disease (...this seems to keep happening to me with names I like) or have any negative associations for people?

How about changing the 'S" for 'H' HELENA

2ombie5layer · 11/04/2012 20:20

DD1's middle name is Selena. It was going to be her first name until I got pregnant, then I went off it a bit so we put it for her middle name.

EssentialFattyAcid · 11/04/2012 20:23

I had a fight at brownies with an older girl called Selena so it wouldn't work for me Grin

Flowerface · 11/04/2012 20:35

For a long time our first choice was Helena, but DH and I pronounce it differently, which is a bit of a problem...

Selena is a lovely name. I can't think of any negative connotations.

BBQJuly · 11/04/2012 22:22

I like Serena too.

oikopolis · 12/04/2012 00:11

like this. agree Serena is also nice.

MadameChinLegs · 12/04/2012 00:20

I know a Selena, she is a twin (Carmen is her twin). Its's a lovely name.

SodoffBaldrick · 12/04/2012 04:11

I think it's a lovely name.

nooka · 12/04/2012 06:10

I prefer Serena (mainly because I had a great friend called Serena) but Selena is nice too (love Helena). Makes me think of Selena Gomez, but only because I have a 11 year old dd :)

FondleWithCare · 12/04/2012 10:09

I like it.

mrswee · 12/04/2012 11:12

I like it a lot. One of my Mum's friends DD is called Selena and it was shortened to 'Seeny' which I also really like.

squoosh · 12/04/2012 11:14

I like it a lot. Will travel well and most people would be able to make a decent attempt at pronouncing it correctly, always think this is a good thing.

Lena is a cute nickname.

Elenaki · 12/04/2012 11:46

I like it too, and wouldn't think of sanitary products or horrific diseases!

Do you like Melina? Sounds similar. That said, I've heard that Melina is also the name of a very gross-sounding disease so that is not much help. I like both though and it probably wouldn't put me off.

minipie · 13/04/2012 17:59

I love Selena, and Serena.

you could consider Selene (pronounced sell any) as well. Or Carine/Carina.

Stellan · 13/04/2012 18:05

I thought Selene was pronounced like Phoebe is so something like seh-lee-nee. Think it's the name of a moon goddess - nice, ethereal connotation.

Selena is pretty and I'm not aware of any negative associations. I also like Serena.

suburbandream · 13/04/2012 18:11

I like it, didn't know about the not-so-nice connotations. What about Serena as others have said, or Sabrina?

minipie · 13/04/2012 18:19

That's the pronunciation I meant Stellan but your way of describing it is better!

Flowerface · 13/04/2012 20:05

Sorry - I wasn't being clear. I don't think there are any horrid connotations for it, but wanted to check. We were dead-set on Milena for months before Mumsnetters advised me that it was the medical term for bloody poo... So I wanted to check this wasn't going to happen again before burdening the poor baby with it. Looking good this time though!

I saw a character on a telly programme years ago called Salene (pronounced Sal-een), I thought that was quite nice, what about that?
