Do you like this for a girl? Could be short for Mercedes, but even as a name in its own right - a virtue name, along the lines of Grace etc....?

Reminds me of a hospital I used to work at.
Prefer Honor or Verity.

PuppyMonkey · 04/04/2012 14:26

Not keen really.

Sandalwood · 04/04/2012 14:27

French for thankyou.
Liverpool's River.

No. too much going against it for me.

peeriebear · 04/04/2012 14:30

There's one in DD1's class- I wouldn't choose it, but I've heard stranger.

tara0202 · 04/04/2012 14:51

I really don't like Mercy or Mercedes. Honour and Grace are really nice names IMO.

DoubleGlazing · 04/04/2012 14:53

It's OK.

PercyFilth · 04/04/2012 19:06

Yes, I love it.

It is not spelt or pronounced the same as either 'merci' or Mersey, so can't see any basis to that objection.

outyougo · 04/04/2012 19:10

Worrying to bystanders if shouted loudly and repeatedly.

Clawdy · 04/04/2012 21:54

Sounds rather Puritan. Saw a production of "The Crucible" last week, there's a very unpleasant girl in it called Mercy....

oikopolis · 04/04/2012 22:12

not keen. but there was a nasty playground game called "mercy" when i was growing up, so that may have coloured my opinion somewhat.

that and i just get the Duffy song in my head immediately.

EmilyPollifaxInnocentTourist · 04/04/2012 22:15

I think it's pretty.

FannyPriceless · 04/04/2012 22:17

Oh dear. Have you read the Jill pony books? There was a character named Mercy Dulbottle. She was introduced into the narrative by her aunt calling out her name from the kitchen door. Jill and her friends thought there must be a murder taking place...

happybigbump · 04/04/2012 22:18

I think Mercy is fine for a girl. Short for Mercedes (quite popular in Spain).

No, I would not pronounce MER-cy like Merci (Mer-cEE) at all, so would not even associate the two.

Devora · 04/04/2012 22:19

I like it.

HotRattyBunInTheOven · 04/04/2012 22:20

It's lovely. Go for it. Smile

gemma4d · 04/04/2012 22:23

Hated it when I first came across it but loved it after a while. But then I love the Mercy Thompson series of books (she is a lovely kick ass girl who turns into a coyote btw)

bibbitybobbitybunny · 04/04/2012 22:23

Ooooo ... sorry but no, don't like it at all.

Love Mercedes though, but only if you're Spanish.

sashh · 05/04/2012 10:03

I use to work at an international college, we had a Mercy as a student.

Psammead · 05/04/2012 10:22

I quite like Mercia.
