Not pg but there was a vampire in Being Human the other week called Golda and I thought what a great name. What do people think?

Golda Meir. Female prime minister of Israel and much respected IIRC.

Bue · 02/04/2012 19:19

All I can think of is Meir

mirry2 · 02/04/2012 19:23

First thought was Golder Meir. Wonderful woman but not the best looking and i would always associate the name with a rather elderly dumpy and homely looking woman. sorry.

DoubleGlazing · 02/04/2012 19:38

My first thought was Goldie Hawn.

MrsBeakman · 02/04/2012 19:39

Was there a Golda in Fiddler on the Roof? The Matchmaker maybe? Fiddler on the Roof might be a rich seam for (jewish) baby names.

MrsBeakman · 02/04/2012 19:40

Here we are:
Tevye, the milkman
Tzeitel, his eldest daughter
Hodel, his second-eldest
Chava, his middle daughter
Golde, his wife
Motel, a tailor, in love with Tzeitel
Perchik, a student, in love with Hodel
Yente, the matchmaker
Lazar Wolf, the butcher
Fruma-Sarah, Lazar Wolf's late wife
Grandma Tzeitel, a late relative
The Russian, a Christian, in love with Chava
The Rabbi
Mendel, the Rabbi's son
Avrahm, a bookseller
Shprintze and Bielke, Tevye's youngest daughters

LineRunner · 02/04/2012 19:44

Perchik was played by Starsky.

I love it, love Golda, BUT i would only feel able to use it if i was Jewish.Sadly i'm not. Sad

It is a beautiful name.

Janoschi · 02/04/2012 20:46

Marigold nn Goldie / Golda?

Rhubarbgarden · 02/04/2012 21:22

I'm afraid I thought of the Blue Peter dog.

I immediately thought of Golda Meir, as a pp has mentioned.

BackforGood · 02/04/2012 21:50

I did start singing "If I were a Rich Man" to myself as soon as I saw it Grin

LemonTurd · 02/04/2012 22:06

"I'd build a big, tall house with rooms by the dozen..." Love that song :o

BackforGood · 02/04/2012 22:12

"One long staircase just going up, and one even longer coming down...." Grin

LongWayRound · 02/04/2012 22:17

Golda was a (non-Jewish) woman's name in early medieval England. See here for names taken from medieval documents.

mamalovesmojitos · 02/04/2012 22:17

Nice.

SilkStalkings · 02/04/2012 22:41

Yeah it definitely has Jewish/German overtones without any particularly nasty connotations (eg I love Eva but Eva Braun ruins it for me), I think we're due a Yiddish revival after all the biblical namesGrin. I think it definitely sums up a strong woman and feminism today ought to allow there to be a difference between that and battleaxe/fishwife.
