The I.R.A. would never have occurred to me.

I love the name Ira, I know one and I would have never even thought of the IRA connection unless it had been mentioned on here. As you are Jewish I think you can definitely go for it, if anybody says anything about the IRA just point out that it is a Jewish name and nothing to do with it. I don't think many people would though, as everyone knows names aren't pronounced as a string of letters.

I know two girls called Ayra rather than Ira (pronounced the same). Think I prefer Ayra.
