Ciarán

A girl will definitely be Roisín.

I quite like Eamonn but can't imagine a baby Eamonn.

Cillian is with a hard C, pronounced killy-un.

hardcheese Macdara is fabulous! DH would never ever go for it but I love it.

Daragh is definitely on the list. I'm not sure about having siblings with the same initial - mainly because I'd get confused.

Greeneyed the fadas are the subject of much debate at the moment - MIL (Tipperary) says Róisín, godmother (Dublin) says Roisín - I always thought it was Róisín.

Maryz we're in the UK but DH is Irish.

I love Rohan but it looks odd with our surname, Rowan is on the list but have also added Ruan.

OP posts:
squoosh · 26/03/2012 14:41

MIL in Tipperary is right, it's definitely two fadas. The fada over the o gives it the long oh sound (fada actually means long)

á = aaw
é = ay
í - ee
ó = oh
ú = ooo

Róisín = Roh-sheen (roh to rhyme with no)

In Ireland we place the emphasis on the first syllable. In Scotland they emphasise the second syllable so it sounds more like R'sheen, this spelling would be without the fada over the o.

I love Seamus

babyblabber · 26/03/2012 19:52

i love cillian but wouldn't have the same initial either.

finn, finian, eoin, sean and oisin are lovely too. (although don't use oisin if you want more in case you want to save roisin for a girl)

whoever suggested ailbhe, that's a girl's name!
