Greta or Nancy? And a middle name

scratchviolet · 22/03/2012 08:10

DD2 due any day now and DH and I have narrowed the short list down to Nancy or Greta. I'd previously ruled out Greta as was trying to avoid a 2 syllable name ending in 'a' as DD1 is Stella. But I keep coming back to Greta. Is it too similar to Stella? And which do you prefer - Greta or Nancy?

Also any ideas for middle names? Probably need 3 syllables. Would love to use Emmeline but rhymes with Dd1's middle name!

Thanks

Nancy.

Both are lovely. So is Emmeline, does it matter that it rhymes with a middle name?

I'm so helpful aren't I!

Greta is such a pretty name.

scratchviolet · 22/03/2012 09:17

Thanks. Love Nancy Josephine but gives me the same problem re 'ine' ending. Although maybe it doesn't really matter. I mean we hardly ever refer to DD1s middle name. Nancy Delilah a def possibility too.

Don't really have a preference netween Greta and Nancy (not much help there!) but I don't think there's any problem having a Greta and a Stella - they are very different names even though they end the same. Also there is absolutely no problem with their middle names rhyming

Prefer Greta.

Greta Lucinda
Greta Elizabeth

How about Greta Nancy?

birdofthenorth · 22/03/2012 11:55

Love Greta! I think it's fine with Stella too, I know plenty of sibling combos both ending in 'y' or 'a' and never batted an eyelid

BuntyPenfold · 22/03/2012 12:11

Greta is a lovely pretty name. I tried to keep it on our shortlist but DH preferred other names.

I like Math suggestion of Greta Rosemary, beautiful.

DancingRoundTheKitchen · 23/03/2012 21:30

I really like both names but i think Greta sounds better with Stella.

saffronwblue · 24/03/2012 04:13

Have you considered Gretel? Also very pretty.

SodoffBaldrick · 24/03/2012 05:20

Greta, definitely.

scratchviolet · 24/03/2012 05:56

Not really considered Gretel as just makes me think of Fairy tale. Had thought about Gretchen but it's definitely Greta I prefer. DH marginally prefers Nancy so may need to use this thread to help tip him over to Greta.

Some lovely suggestions for middle names maths. (and mine and my mum's name! I'd love to use my mum's name but it would probably cause huge resentment from the MIL - a whole other thread!)

I love Gretel, I don't see what's wrong with sharing your name with a fairy tale character, particularly such a strong female character - and it's such a pretty name.

peggyblackett · 24/03/2012 09:11

Nancy :)

thegreylady · 24/03/2012 09:38

I love Nancy and find Greta a bit harsh. It makes me think of the Scottish use of 'greet 'meaning to weep. Nancy on the other hand has a soft, sweet sound and reminds me of the Sinatra song 'Nancy with the laughing face.'

ThePoorMansBeckySharp · 24/03/2012 18:19

Greta
