What do you think of Louis?

What do you think of Louis as a boy's name? It's listed on Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder.

This is our top name as well, with only 4 weeks to go! The trouble is, our last name is Hamilton and I worry that people will pronounce it wrong as lewis. Not a F1 fan!

The correct pronunciation is Loo-ie, it's French! I have thought about calling him Louie, to stop any confusion, but it just doesn't seem as nice and reminds me of Louie Spence...

Love it! Pronounced Loo-ie. Would have been on our list of boy's names, but we already had an Ella and thought it might have looked like a 'jazz theme' was motivating our naming choices.

Yes. Very common, at least where I live.

Have a look at the statistics to see if it is rising up the charts - it feels like it is becoming more popular. I know a 7 year old and a 3 year old Louis (both pronounced Lou-is).

If want Lou - is, then choose Lewis.

Even if the French pronunciation of Louis is Loo-ie, a lot of non-French speakers will pronounce it Loo-is. Personally, I'd spell it Louie outside of France if I wanted it pronounced that way. In Spain, for example, it is Luis, pronounced Loo-is and in Germany, Louis, also pronounced with an s.

My father was born in a NE Scotland fishing town and his name is Louis/ Lou- ee, which is what my mother and his friends called him. I was at his sisters funeral and they were calling him Lewis which I found very strange.

Lewis is as much an (English) name as Louis is a French one. Just because Lewis happens to be the name of an island as well doesn't make it less of a name. And don't forget St Louis in Missouri (pronounced St Loo-is by the way).

poppydaisy: just to confuse matters, I once knew someone from St Louis and she told me the correct pronunciation is St Loo-is but it's affectionately known as St Loo-ie.
