DH likes 'proper' names!

What ever that means!
To date we have
Alice
Lucy
Josie

I like Poppy but Dh vetoed it. Does that indicate where we're heading?

Any further suggestions? I don't love any of these.

'Josie' doesn't sound like a 'proper' name to me tbh. Its no more real than Poppy in any case.

Bue · 13/03/2012 19:27

Josie is definitely not a 'proper' name so I am confused.

shockers · 13/03/2012 19:32

Why isn't Josie a proper name? It's a very old name, often short for Josephine but also used as a name in itself.

scarletforya · 13/03/2012 19:33

Tell him Josie is short for Josephine!

shockers · 13/03/2012 19:34

Florence (Floss)
Polly
Tess
Jemima
Eliza
Charlotte (Lottie)

justlemonade · 13/03/2012 19:42

Sorry I didn't make myself clear, it would be Josephine.

Thanks shockers I like Florence. Will get to work.

Ah I see! I like Alice best!

doctordwt · 13/03/2012 19:56

Tell him your heart is set on !Shazerkazam! and work back from there.

ButterPecanMuffin · 13/03/2012 19:58

My votes for Josephine, but with the nn Posy, as opposed to Josie.

Oh I see, Josephine is definitely proper!

By 'proper', does he just want a full name on the birth certificate? Because Poppy can stretch to Penelope...

KatieScarlett2833 · 13/03/2012 21:15

Haha

DD is on the proper list.

I'm sure DS will be too in the boys version.

I'm proper old skool, me.

cece · 13/03/2012 21:18

Good for him. I like proper names too.

Harriet

ellesabe · 13/03/2012 21:31

Great list filtercoffee !!

shockers · 13/03/2012 21:47

I'm on there... I'm 'proper' Grin. I love my name too!

Letchladee · 13/03/2012 22:16

Sorry, I'm with your DH on this one too. I can't abide the modern fashion for just giving the nickname as the full name. I personally think it is much nicer to use the full name (and apart from anything else, gives the child options as to what they want to do with their name, when they are old enough to make those decision).

Think it is particularly true of the prissycutesy flower names that is ubiquitous at the moment.

My DDs both have 'Proper' names and then more trendy nicknames should they choose to use them (one does, the other does not).

justlemonade · 13/03/2012 22:19

Grin at doctor Maybe I'll try that one!

Thanks for the list filter loads to choose from here. DD's name is on here so it's certainly a list with the tone of names we're looking for. Just mentioned Sophia to DH and Got positive response!

I don't know any Josephines. However, based on siblings of Lucys and Alices I know, people who like Lucy and Alice also like:
Jane
Grace
Katie
Seren
Zoe
Sophie
Mary
Rachel.

baskingseals · 14/03/2012 09:09

both dd and I are on filter's list. Great list Smile

what about Elizabeth, Katherine, Eleanor, Marianne, Emily, Virginia?

Zanzicat · 14/03/2012 10:01

Shortened names aren't necessarily a modern fashion. Name trends are cyclical and ever evolving. DH's granny has a shortened name on her birth certificate. She is almost 101. She's got on fine. Ultimately you just need to find a name you both love. I know this can be quite a task.

marshmallowpies · 14/03/2012 10:19

DH and I both like proper names...but completely different ones...if he had his way DD would be called Abigail, Samantha, Jessica, Emma or Joanne. I only like Jessica out of all those and have vetoed on the grounds it's too popular. Really really dislike the other 4, especially Abigail!

I like Miranda, Meredith, Ramona and other slightly more unusual - but still definitely proper - names. I did consider Josephine and Veronica briefly and still think both are nice.

Miranda is the one we are most veering towards at the moment. I do feel bad that I couldn't compromise on any of his names, but I really, really don't like them.

Sarahplane · 14/03/2012 18:35

Katharine
Hazel
Emily
Lilly
Emma
Amelia
