It won't get shortened to Tilly if you don't want it to, you can just call her Matilda. Other nn for Matilda are Mattie/Matty and Tilda. I also know a Matilda whose nn is Milly.

IMO Milly and Matilda are too similar anyway.

smogwod · 10/03/2012 16:08

If you'd not already abbreviated to something else she would become Tilly at school. You could go for Mattie or Tilda but I agree there's just too many m's & l's to use it with Milly

FilterCoffee · 10/03/2012 17:49

Too similar.

Letchladee · 10/03/2012 17:50

I know two siblings called Millie and Matilda. I had never thought to question it - although the Matilda is never called Tillie (sometimes Tilda I think though)

milly + tilly = silly (sorry)

ragged · 11/03/2012 11:56

I'd mentally refer to them in my head as Millie & Tilly even if I never said it out loud yes I am horrible. I am not a fan of Matilda anyway, though.
Mattie is a decent nn, though.
There are so many lovely girl names, is your heart that attached to Matilda?

bobbledunk · 11/03/2012 16:11

I love MatildaSmile

DialsMavis · 11/03/2012 21:42

I have a Matilda and she is NEVER Tilly, always Matilda or Tilda. But, it's getting far too popular so don't use it Grin. Is Milly just Milly or is that short for something?

TheMerchantOfVenom · 12/03/2012 04:30

What is with all these threads at the moment with people wanting to give their children such similar names?! Confused And inevitably they're proper zeitgeist-y names - can they really not think outside the box at all?! Grin

I mean, honestly, there are vast swathes of names out there in the universe, and you only like Milly and Tilly? Hmm

justwantcheese · 12/03/2012 08:25

Matilda is not my first choice its husbands. I am doing my best to put him off even though I made the mistake of saying he could choose this time. I am wanting Athene.

shoobidoo · 12/03/2012 13:21

You've got a Millie and want to name your next daugher Tilly? Really Shock?!

shoobidoo · 12/03/2012 13:21

Athene is gorgeous, feminine and much more timeless! And much less overused!!

PrincessScrumpy · 13/03/2012 18:13

my dad wanted to call me Matilda and shorten it to Mattie. dh and I made it dtd1's middle name.

PrincessScrumpy · 13/03/2012 18:13

oh and a friend's Matilda is called Tilda for short.

ShowOfHands · 13/03/2012 18:19

Our Mathilda is Tilda, never Tilly. Not at school or anywhere else. She prefers her full name if possible though or Tilda if not.

LittleWhiteWolf · 14/03/2012 09:09

Mathilda was on my list for DC2 if they turn out to be a girl, but after testing it out on family members I was put off. More than one said "Oh we shall call her Milly then", which is a nn I don't like as its very common where I live. I was also told that having the H in Mathilda was wrong Hmm. So in the end I chose to veto the name.

I would have shortened to Mattie or Tilly.

ShowOfHands · 14/03/2012 10:20

I like the h. It's a perfectly good and old germanic spelling which makes sense for our family's background.

Stellan · 14/03/2012 11:35

I've only known a couple of Matildas but they've both been Tillys. I think you'd have to use Tilda or Matty as a nickname.

petitema · 14/03/2012 11:40

I have a millie and considered matilda but obviously wouldn't have used tilly! But seeing them written down they are too similar.

DialsMavis · 14/03/2012 12:03

We decided against the h, but I really do like it now and might stick it in at some point if my Tilda ends up with 165990 friends also called Matilda Smile

ProlificYoungGentlemenBreeder · 14/03/2012 12:09

Possibly too sin

ProlificYoungGentlemenBreeder · 14/03/2012 12:09

I'll try that again...

Possibly too similar IMO
