Are these nicknames 'enough' of a name

love the name Isabel but oh has gone of it though we both still really like the nn izzy. Our dd1 is called Abby and we never worried that she just has a nn as a name but worry that izzy just isn't a name in it's own right.

Similar theme but I also love the name indie. Don't like any longer versions. Indie though somehow seems more complete for a name even though it's prob much less common.

Any thoughts?

I don't understand this mania for giving kids a 'proper' name which you then never use. All this 'imagine a high court judge called Izzy' nonsense. Call your child the best name you can think of, that's not 'selfish'. Sigh.

As it happens, I like names you can shorten so that's what I've chosen for my DC. If you don't, just put the nn on the bc and call them that. It's not as if you've decided to call your DS Flangebucket, FFS...

hubbahubster · 11/03/2012 19:29

Or DD even.

It has been a trend for a long time now to give what used to be nicknames as registered names - think Ellie, Mollie, Evie, Jamie, Jack etc etc etc

Give your child a "nickname" if this is what you want to do OP and don't listen to anyone else. They get to make their own choices for their own children and that is enough.

mayanna123 · 11/03/2012 19:58

But the OP has come here, asking for opinions on whether her suggested name is too 'nicknamey'. And we're giving our opinions - that's all.

Plaguegroup · 11/03/2012 20:25

Every Abigail I know is Abi/Abby/Abbie even though they are adults, I don't know anyone who uses a full version.

I prefer using the name you're going to call them on the birth certificate. At work we use several different computer systems and people are Bob/Robert, Liz/Elizabeth, Amanda/Mandy, Anthony/Tony, depending which one you're logged into. One system will only search by first initial of the first name so this makes everything more complicated than it needs to be!

You're never going to persuade everyone to agree about this though. Smile

Mayanna, my opinion is that it's up to the parents to make the decision on naming their child. The OP loves the name Izzy, so why pick something else?

My opinion is also that it's incredibly rude to call someone 'short sighted and selfish' for such an innocuous reason.

startail · 12/03/2012 15:31

I never use my full name, to the point I wouldn't turn round if some one shouted it.

I hate putting it on official forms, it's just not me.

Therefore, I guess I have to let you have Izzy, even though it does feel slightly incomplete. Don't know why because Abby doesn't. Possibly because there's an Abby at school (don't know if she's Abigail on her BC, she's always been Abby from a baby).

shoobidoo · 12/03/2012 15:34

Personally I find Izzy far too nicknamey and 'cutesy', op. I'd rather be called Isabel and have the options as to which nicknames people call be by.

Hubba, the op DID ask for our opinios. Yes, of course it is up to the parents to name their child. And many parents do so without any outside opinions. But the op has chosen to ask us, perhaps a little unsure herself, and so that is what the posters are doing - giving their opinions.

abbypumpkin · 13/03/2012 08:58

thankyou for all of the reasonable replies, I might be tempted to just use Izzy but OH really doesn't think we can so we're going to look at something else.

whilst people on here ask for opinion and therefore should be willing to accept if others say they don't like names I really find that this site has several rather rude people who think it is acceptible to insult others due to their particular tastes and because they dare to ask for opinion. if that's the way you feel then why are you even looking at this site? the whole purpose of the thread is for people to 'sound out' their names in order to get a general reaction. I really can't understand why some people want to be so nasty?

I think they are being honest and it's just that you don't like their opinions

Bellaholland · 16/03/2012 15:54

How on earth is it selfish!!!!! I love both Abby and Izzy and in fact I like them si much I am about to suggest them to my husband!
