How popular is Stanley?

We have always loved and wanted to use Stanley but there seems to be a few cropping up around here. I really don't like it when you go to the park and shout out your child's name for 3 to turn around so we decided not to use it.

Instead we are thinking of Bert and DH like Percy, I loved Bert but I keep returning to Stanley so do you think Stanley is the next Archie?

I also really like Bert but we don't really like using abbreviated names and don't like any of the full names for Bert.

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

DC1 is 12, I go to a lot of toddler groups & have lived in 3 different towns in last 12 yrs and I've yet to meet a single Stanley. Of any age, I suspect!

Then again, I only can think of 2 Archies, and not a single Bert except a psycho guinea pig probably depends on your social circles.

Stanley is one of the names in the current "old man" trend, with Albert/Bertie, Eric, Sidney, Archie, Arthur, Wilfred etc.

In 2010 it was number 88 in the boys name chart (737 boys named Stanley that year), so while it's fashionable again I wouldn't say it was over-popular either.

My late grandfather's name - and wish I'd called my DS it as he passed away 6 months after he was born ;-( It's lovely, and not too common at all in my experience. Stanley is sweet for a baby/toddler/boy and Stan is very cool for a teenager too..Bert is ok but can't help but think cruel kids will call him burp!!!

RetroMum1 · 09/03/2012 20:37

Filtercoffee we both love Albert but we named our dog it, who we no longer have but still can't call a DS it!

I'd never thought of the burp thing!

We are in SE London and there are hundreds of Archie's here and a few Stanley's. I only know of 1 Bert and it's not in the immediate area, I love Bertie for a toddler and think Bert works well for a teenager/adult but I just love Stanley. However it really does bother me when I meet lots of other kids with the same name, probably because I was one of 5 with my name in my year.

I know 1 toddler Stanley and 1 teen Stan (my son's middle name is Stanley, but only because it was the name of both of DH's Grandads)

pinkhebe · 09/03/2012 20:44

2 teen Stans - sorry

ahhhhhpushit · 09/03/2012 20:46

I go to lots of toddler groups and never met one :)

No Stans here. Ace name. Makes me think of Flat Stanley.

Apparently Dido called her son Stanley, which is dead weird given that song she did with Eminem... Hmm

I have a Stanley, and have met a couple of others, I think it's popular but not overly so.
