Coco - yay or nay?!

DD is due in a couple of months (we already have a DS), and I really like the name Coco, but DP isn't keen- he says she'll have the piss taken out of her and be teased for being like 'Coco the Clown' or 'hot chocolate'.

I, however, think it's pretty and could suit either a baby, child, or adult. Even my Mum likes it (hard!) and says that people who might think of Coco the Clown are more likely to be of the older generation- today's kids won't even think it.

She would have lovely, classic family names as middle names that all flow well together, and Coco goes well with our surname.

Should I carry on trying to persuade DP, or am I in the depths of hormonal naming madness?! Grin

It's a nay from me I'm afraid, don't like it at all.

The5thFishy · 09/03/2012 14:04

Says clown or Nazi collaborator to me.

Bucharest · 09/03/2012 14:04

Unless you are a French dead style icon with lots of handbags, no.

juneybean · 09/03/2012 14:05

I met a family with a Coco and it didn't even register as a weird name to me, isn't Courtney Cox's little one called Coco?

mayanna123 · 09/03/2012 14:08

Sounds masculine to my ears. Curious George is called Coco der Affe in Germany.

Shinyshoes1 · 09/03/2012 14:10

I like it

FilterCoffee · 09/03/2012 14:13

Another no here, sorry.

How about Cassia or Cara? Or Colette or Corinne, with Coco as nickname?

TheUncannyValley · 09/03/2012 14:14

It's awful.Perhaps ok as a nickname,or a middle as a push,but certainly not as a first name.

NoDontLickThat · 09/03/2012 14:15

It is awful, you could buy her a teddy and call that coco instead

SnaggleFlap · 09/03/2012 14:20

Hmmm mixed reviews as I suspected!

Finding naming a girl harder than I thought to be honest- I was sure that it would be easy as there are loads of girls names around, more than there seemed to be boys when we were naming DS, but want something we love but that isn't tooooo popular IYSWIM?

I do love Coco though

I quite like to so, if you love it, go for it. Coco the clown died nearly 40 years ago. While cocoa continues to be a hot beverage, plenty of babies seem to be named after fruit and flowers, and this doesn't even have the same spelling. While not common, the name is far to mainstream for anyone to tease your DD for having it.

minipie · 09/03/2012 14:49

I'd say it's ok as a nickname but please give her something else as a full name in case she wants a more "serious" name for CV purposes etc in future.

What about Cora nn Coco? Cordelia, Constance, Coralie, Corinna... all could have nn Coco.

ProcrastinateWildly · 09/03/2012 15:12

I like it, but as a nickname (which of course it is).

mummybare · 09/03/2012 15:12

I like it. It's not so outlandish as to get result in teasing so if you love it, go for it. Life would be very boring (not to mention confusing...) if everyone liked the same names, and anything out-of-the-ordinary is bound to get its detractors, but there will also be plenty of people who think it is beautiful.

ProcrastinateWildly · 09/03/2012 15:14

Coco Chanel's real first name was Gabrielle.

CaptainHetty · 09/03/2012 15:26

It strikes me as more of a nickname than a 'proper' name, if that makes sense? But you should go for a name you love, what strangers on the internet think shouldn't influence your decision _

I like it.

But middle name if your husband doesn´t really like it?

Are you really that bothered about your Mum´s opinion?

nizlopi · 09/03/2012 15:33

My little sister is called Chloe, but we call her Coco as a nickname :) I would say giver her a name similar and then she can use either. Coco on a CV? Not really...

belgo · 09/03/2012 15:34

I love it too. Wanted it for dd2. Just couldn't in the end though, too 'out there'.

winkle2 · 09/03/2012 15:38

I love it but not brave enough to use it!

TimothyClaypoleLover · 09/03/2012 15:43

Coco Pops!

Don't hate the name Coco but think it also depends on what type of people you are. Agree with having it as a middle name if your DH really doesn't like it.

I think it's fine as a nickname, but not a 'proper' name

SylvieSmith · 09/03/2012 16:24

I'm going to speak bluntly to you OP - it's a stripper's name.

And it definitely doesn't pass the Prime Minister test (i.e. could you imagine a Prime Minister called that?).

It's just completely lacking in style.
