Coco - yay or nay?!

DD is due in a couple of months (we already have a DS), and I really like the name Coco, but DP isn't keen- he says she'll have the piss taken out of her and be teased for being like 'Coco the Clown' or 'hot chocolate'.

I, however, think it's pretty and could suit either a baby, child, or adult. Even my Mum likes it (hard!) and says that people who might think of Coco the Clown are more likely to be of the older generation- today's kids won't even think it.

She would have lovely, classic family names as middle names that all flow well together, and Coco goes well with our surname.

Should I carry on trying to persuade DP, or am I in the depths of hormonal naming madness?! Grin

I went to school with a Coco, it totally suited her, she never got teased, and now she's a professional in London.
It's never held her back, I think perhaps it's done the opposite.

MadameChinLegs · 09/03/2012 16:28

I rather like it, but wouldn't use it myself. Wouldn't bat an eyelid if someone I know called their child it. Are there any others in the mixin pot, and what is your DSs name, if you dont mind sharing....might be able to help with suggestions.

sparkle12mar08 · 09/03/2012 16:42

It screams porn star to me. Awful, absolutely awful.

MerryMarigold · 09/03/2012 16:45

I know of one Coco and when I heard it I just thought sounded rather film starry and like Coco Chanel. Pretty cool I think. Wouldn't think of clown, but Chanel or Pops at a push. Still think it's worth those associations. One loved by kids and the other by grown ups!

glub · 09/03/2012 16:53

cute name. but a nickname imo.

CalamityJones · 09/03/2012 16:56

I've got a Coco. I love her name, and I've had nothing but good reactions to it (though maybe that's just to my face!)

She got off lightly, if I'd had a boy I wanted to call him Teddy.

overmydeadbody · 09/03/2012 17:00

I want to know what your DS is called.

I tihnk, if you like Coco, go for it.

jaffacakehips · 09/03/2012 17:14

I also want to know what your DS is called!?! {nosy}

I really like Coco.

Courtney Cox's nn as a child. Hence why her DD was called Coco.

oikopolis · 09/03/2012 17:27

It's a traditional nickname for Nicole and Nicolette, if you don't like the "Co-" names.

I wouldn't use it as a birth cert name. It's insubstantial, v nicknamey.

winkle2 · 09/03/2012 18:07

I love Nicolette with the nn coco

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 09/03/2012 18:08

No, give her the classic name with Coco as the middle name.

HandMadeTail · 09/03/2012 18:21

Just a point about "give her a middle name she can use".

My sister decided to use her first name, instead of her middle name at about 10 years old. Her teacher thought she had a hearing problem, because she didn't respond when he said her name. She quickly changed back to her middle name.

So, once you start using a name, it could be for good.

But FWIW, I quite like Coco.

BillyBollyBandy · 09/03/2012 18:24

I have a Claudia nn Coco due to her big sister's mispronounciation. Everyone loves it!

TidyDancer · 09/03/2012 18:24

Sorry, but I think Coco is a terrible name.

ArielNonBio · 09/03/2012 18:25

No.

Kikithecat · 09/03/2012 18:30

Ahem. My dd is called Coco. It is short for Corinne. Everyone seems to like it. Her friends sometimes call her Coco-pops in a friendly way. By the way my husband is French. Hope that makes it OK and that she won't have to be a stripper!

marshmallowpies · 09/03/2012 18:30

Fraid I'm with the 'nickname not a real name' crowd. It's pretty, but there are lots of even prettier proper names beginning with C which could be shortened to Coco.

Plus, it's also quite popular for cats I believe...

TidyDancer · 09/03/2012 18:33

Coco as a nickname is a totally different thing than actually being called Coco.

LondonNadiy · 09/03/2012 18:46

I love Coco, there was a girl at school called Coco. It had never occurred to me that it would an odd name! I think keep convincing!! You'll always regret not using the name you want. Nothing wrong with being the only one in the class either!

NoHunIntended · 09/03/2012 18:48

Lovely.

ipanicked · 09/03/2012 19:05

I think coco is lovely. I'd give a BC 'Sunday' name too but that's just me not being brave. I know a couple of cocos and I think it suits them.

DialMforMummy · 09/03/2012 19:15

It's a no for me. Ok for a child but a bit ridiculous for an adult i.e.: Hello I am Professor Coco Smith.

BelleStar · 09/03/2012 20:42

I love it! I really wanted to name dd Coco but dh didn't like it at all. So I had to compromise. Grr. I hate compromise!

Sting's daughter is also called Coco. I wish I was called Coco.

DustyDen · 09/03/2012 21:15

Cocoa. Delicious, but kind of silly.
