Coco - yay or nay?!

DD is due in a couple of months (we already have a DS), and I really like the name Coco, but DP isn't keen- he says she'll have the piss taken out of her and be teased for being like 'Coco the Clown' or 'hot chocolate'.

I, however, think it's pretty and could suit either a baby, child, or adult. Even my Mum likes it (hard!) and says that people who might think of Coco the Clown are more likely to be of the older generation- today's kids won't even think it.

She would have lovely, classic family names as middle names that all flow well together, and Coco goes well with our surname.

Should I carry on trying to persuade DP, or am I in the depths of hormonal naming madness?! Grin

no

mamalovesmojitos · 09/03/2012 21:22

Yay

AmberLeaf · 09/03/2012 21:23

I love it!

joanofarchitrave · 09/03/2012 21:25

I know two - perfectly acceptable IMO. I wouldn't personally use it but that's because I'm not cool/boho enough Grin I also prefer it to Poppy, Holly, Molly, Dolly et al. The only trouble with it is that if your name is Coco, you can get a nickname reminiscent of a famous soft drink which I do think can be ugly.

Tooblunt2012 · 09/03/2012 21:26

Yay from me too - love it!

Clareabella16 · 09/03/2012 22:00

I love it. Actually my cat is called coco lol but I would def call a girl coco, obv not with the cat lol. I think it def depends what type of person you are, it's a very trendy name and can understand why more traditional people wouldn't like it. I say go for it, your daughter would be so cool! X

chandellina · 09/03/2012 22:12

I think it's fab. I would probably play it safe with Colette or something on the birth certificate but think Coco is lovely for any age.

WetAugust · 09/03/2012 23:47

Truly hideous! it's a sound - not a real name.

kallima · 09/03/2012 23:56

my lovely cat is called coco Smile

MsF1t · 10/03/2012 00:34

I really like it. Use it as an abbreviation for another, more 'dull' name if it makes you feel better (which is what we did!).

I'm sure there are plenty of appropriate names you could use as her Sunday name.

As for teasing, I honestly think people overthink that stuff. It's not as though there aren't hordes of children called all sorts of bizarre things these days.

MsF1t · 10/03/2012 00:35

(I like chandellina's suggestion of Colette.)

LumpyLatimer · 10/03/2012 00:43

Dear God no. What if she wants to be a barrister/neurosurgeon/cabinet maker/Egyptologist/investment banker/head of MI5?

Sorry, bit harsh of me, but I hate names that basically confer an entire fluffy feminine girly identity on a child Confused

TheMerchantOfVenom · 10/03/2012 06:25

Lacks substance, but if you like it, go for it.

Someone I went to school with has called her DD Coco, and I think it's used enough to not raise that many eyebrows.

Not to my taste. And yes, even Coco Chanel had a real name. Actually - I think it's a great nickname, but yeah, definitely lacks substance as an actual name.

mammaaintraisinnofool · 10/03/2012 08:47

I love it.

Polkadotfanatic · 10/03/2012 11:40

I heard a rumour that Courtney Cox named her daughter Coco as it was the first two letters of each of her name....if that's true, then it's narcissm at it's finest....

I digress, this is the way I look at it... Would you at your age be happy to introduce yourself as Coco Snaggleflap? If you can imagine introducing yourself as that to anyone and wouldnt feel a bit Blush then why not?

Personally, it makes me think of Ice T's wife with the massive and surely not real ass voloptuous figure - although she is a Nicole.

savoycabbage · 10/03/2012 11:48

As long as your ds is not called Milo, then it shouldn't be a problem.

MyBaby1day · 10/03/2012 12:28

LOVE CoCo!!, it's a cool name!!, reminds me of CoCo Chanel!! Smile

SnaggleFlap · 11/03/2012 07:52

Oooh didn't realise there would be so many comments back!

We wouldn't be naming her after Coco Chanel or anything, I just like the name. Wouldn't be totally out of place where we live in London as I've come across a few weird and wonderful names taking DS to baby groups (DS incidentally has a pretty normal name!)

I do quite like Nicole so that could be a compromise, but bit worried she might then have nn 'Nikki' or 'Nic' which I'm really not keen on- although judging by some people's reactions to Coco on here that might be preferable! Grin

It's ok if you are a hipster and live in shoreditch.

seeker · 11/03/2012 08:15

Nickname. Honestly. My ds was known as Patch as a nickname until was old enough to express an opinion, when he simply refused to respond to anything but his proper name. Imagine if hormones had made me put Patch on his birth certificate!

sorry its completely awful - very chavvy like chantelle or candice! a colleague of mine called her dd coco and the remarks made behind her back were shocking! Please dont!!!

CoteDAzur · 11/03/2012 08:40

Coco is a nickname, not a name, even in France. You call "naughty in a cute way" children "petit coco", as an abbreviation of "coquin" ("rascal"). That is how Gabrielle Chanel acquired the nickname "Coco" - her father used to call her "petit coco".
