Rowan is lovely. Friends of ours had a Rowan and we were a but Hmm at first but actually it really suits him and sounds lovely and is relatively uncommon. Initially there was confusion as to how it was pronounced - row as in have an argument or row as in row a boat.

For a boy it's row a boat and for a girl it's the other one.

He gets called 'Ro' for short!

"For a boy it's row a boat and for a girl it's the other one."

No- -as in boat is English, as in argument is Scottish.

Seeker - well the little Rowan lad I know lives in Perthshire. And his parents would make sure it was correct!

SleepyFergus · 04/03/2012 17:41

Im also aware of a couple of girls here in Scotland who are Rowan as in argument also.

A friend of our DS is Roan which I think may be the Welsh spelling of Rowan.

My 2 favourites would be Bay and Leif.

SleepyFergus · 04/03/2012 18:24

Isn't Roan also a colour, as in a reddy shade, used to describe cattle. O grade Biology coming back to haunt me there I think. It was pronounced ro as in row a boat but the end as in 'own' so 'rown' iykwim!
