I saw it on American Idol actually It's a short form of Gabrielle but a name in its own right as well apparently.

Traditionally it's not a name in its own right, it's a nn for Gabrielle.

Though nowadays it seems that if one other person on earth has named someone something, it becomes "a name". so if you use that logic, then yes, it's a name in its own right :)
