Coraline?

Any thoughts?

I am currently 4 months pregnant with our first baby and we are starting to think of names, we don't know if it is a boy or a girl yet but, for some reason we are focussing on girls for now. After having DH gleefully go through my list with a red pen (and subsequently mourning all the beautiful names I can't have... Leonora, Mabel, Isidora, Aurora...) we have a shortlist of one we both really like of:

Adeline
Rosie (I would prefer Rosa or Rosalind/Rosaline with Rosie as a nicename)

and a list of some maybes which one of us loves and the other thinks is ok:

Nora
Maisie
Zoe
Xanthe
Beatrix
Bridget

Last night I randomly thought of Coraline which DH 'doesn't hate'. What are your thoughts on that, and of the others?

ps our surname is two syllables and starts with P, think like Palmer.

Thank you x

Coraline sounds lovely, really flows well and is a bit different too. Maisie, Zoe and Xanthe are also really nice IMO. The others we will have to part company on! Please not Nora or Aurora.

Hedwig3 · 02/03/2012 13:00

LOVE Nora

Rosa is so lovely too

I like Coraline but I think that is the film that gave one of my children nightmares.

HolyNoSheDittantBatman · 02/03/2012 13:09

Adeline - not keen, prefer Adelaide
Rosie - nice, and I like Rosalie as well
Nora - like
Maisie - not keen
Zoe - nice, but a bit meh
Xanthe - ok
Beatrix - not my taste
Bridget - not my taste
Coraline - ok, but I think Coralie is nicer and Cora is lovely as well

Oh and I think you need to listen to your DH, Leonora, Mabel, Isidora and Aurora are all awful.

PoppyS34wantsgoatscheese · 02/03/2012 14:08

Aww, I really like the name Aurora. :o

Not sure about Adeline, but Rosie is cute. I do like Maisie and my friend has just called her baby Beatrix, very sweet.

I really like Coraline, but the film is weird... :)

Coraline is lovely and Neil Gaiman is great, but it will always be associated with the book/film. If you're ok with that then go for it.

Adeline - Nice, don't know any
Rosie - would only like it as a diminutive of eg. Rosalind, Rosanna
Nora - No, Nora Batty
Maisie - No, too twee
Zoe - ok
Xanthe - to try hard
Beatrix - ok
Bridget - no, don't like it sorry.

suebfg · 02/03/2012 20:38

I quite like Coraline and I'm very fussy - not keen on your other suggestions tbh

Stellan · 02/03/2012 20:40

I really like Adeline. Coraline is very strongly associated with Neil Gaiman but if that doesn't bother you, go for it. I like Caroline too.

Rosie and Maisie are lovely nicknames but not full names.

I don't think Nora is as pretty as your other choices but it's a sensible choice. I'm not sure Xanthe is 'user friendly' enough to be a first name.

Bridget, Beatrix, and Zoe are all good choices too - your daughter will be fine with any of those as her name.

Rhubarbgarden · 02/03/2012 22:05

I love Coraline!

Angel786 · 02/03/2012 23:12

Hi glitter I like coralie more than coraline. Love aurora, Rosie. Was thinking of Rosanna ourselves.

Like maisie, zoe and Beatrix.

EllenParsons · 03/03/2012 00:52

I like it but I think of the film/book (though I have never seen/read, so don't know if its a good association!)

What about just Cora?

glittershoes · 03/03/2012 18:44

Thanks everyone!

Ellen I love Cora but, annoyingly for a man who is obsessed with Nora, DH does not like Cora!

I agree with everyone about having Rosie as a nickname, at the moment I am favouring Rosa or Rosalind - what does everyone think of them?

For some reason Coralie doesn't feel right, no idea why!

Must keep thinking! We were always set on Xanthe for a girl, it was the name for years and years but now we are actually having a baby I have slighty gone off it!

Coralie is nicer than Coraline, imo.

Cora is even better.

Rosalie? Rosanna? Rosina?
Celestine? Clemetine?

I love Beatrix.

SayBoo · 03/03/2012 18:55

Rosa is lovely, too
