My husband loves the name Shani for our unborn daughter. I think people would pronounce it too many different ways and that would irritate me.

I'd pronounce it Sha-knee.

I think it's lovely, fwiw.

Unless of course you intend it to be pronounced Shay-knee?

HollyGoHeavily · 28/02/2012 20:23

I would also pronounce it Shar-knee

LittleWhiteWolf · 28/02/2012 20:24

Same as SilentBob

surroundedbyblondes · 28/02/2012 20:24

I would say 'shar-nee' Is that what you were thinking/hoping? I think it sounds very pretty.

As someone with a non-mainstream name myself I can tell you though that I have been annoyed by mis-pronunciation and misspellings of my name my whole life.

Shanny

LittleWhiteWolf · 28/02/2012 20:26

In that I mean I'd pronounced it to rhyme with Danny, not that I'd pronounce Shani to sound like SilentBob Confused

Sorry :o It's a very local name, I think- Some also use Jini (Ginny) for fanjo, which is annoying, as it's one of my favourites...

Shay-knee I knew a Shani and that's how it was pronounced Smile
