What is the point of this thread?

hellymelly · 23/02/2012 12:48

I like all those names! Horace is FAB. (no neither of my dcs have any of them)

imnotmymum · 23/02/2012 12:49

They are not ugly names but have a history and why were you listing down poor dead peoples names- these were someones wife/husband /daughter/son I am confused

tammytoby · 23/02/2012 12:53

No, I don't have children with these names but a lovely uncle who has one of the names. And he is a lovely. Nothing ugly about him or his name imo.

I don't see the point of this thread either...

chipmonkey · 23/02/2012 12:55

My child is buried in a cemetery. Would hate to think someone would have a look then come on the internet mocking her name. Have a bit of respect.

hookaduck · 23/02/2012 12:56

awful op, truly awful thread.

cminor · 23/02/2012 13:00

These were, obviously, from very old headstones. People born 100 years ago. Names from that time are now popular.

OP posts:
jaffacakehips · 23/02/2012 13:05

You can find some lovely old names on headstones however making a thread called 'ugly names' based on your local cemetery is just asking for trouble not to mention being quite odd Hmm

kitsmummy · 23/02/2012 13:08

wow, what a bitch!

nagynolonger · 23/02/2012 13:11

People have started worse threads I'm sure. Would it have been better if OP had found them resurching a family tree?

nagynolonger · 23/02/2012 13:12

Sorry re spelling... again!

ellesabe · 23/02/2012 13:14

Nice. My friend has a 1yo with one of your 'ugly' names...

imnotmymum · 23/02/2012 13:14

Maybe nagynolonger just find it wierd a grown women stalking round a cemetry listing names and categorising them as ugly .. have you got a nice list as well .. truly bizarre

saythatagain · 23/02/2012 13:16

This kind of thread makes me shudder...very cruel.

nagynolonger · 23/02/2012 13:20

You maybe find me wierd too. I have been known to take photos of the gravestones of dead relatives to include with family tree.......I don't stalk though I do it quite openly and never during a graveside service.

We all have a list of names we love or dislike. We even dislike lovely names because of others that had them.

imnotmymum · 23/02/2012 13:23

No I do not find that weird as that your relatives and you compiling your family tree and in OP" for all you who love ugly old names" is there an all ??

tammytoby · 23/02/2012 13:27

Sure, you can look at names at a graveyard or wherever else you like. You can also ask for others' opinions on specific names on here.

But to come on here and declare that certain names are 'ugly' is very narrow minded imo.

Have you nothing better to do?

Well, I like them all. Especially Raymond (ds's mn), Cyril and Mildred. We also loved Doris, but it is too similar to dd's name, so couldn't use it for dd2.

Frontpaw · 23/02/2012 13:59

My mum was one of those. She would be nearly 90, and her name was 'of the time'. They are just old fashioned proper names, unlike some of those that pass as 'names' these days.

ImpYCelyn · 23/02/2012 14:19

DH and I love the name Cyril - only the fact that his cousin is called it has stopped us using it.

I know plenty of Raymonds who were born far more recently than 100 years.

And if these people were born 100 years ago there is a very good chance that they still have children and grandchildren living. Try to show some respect for the dead.

ivykaty44 · 23/02/2012 14:24

all names are beautiful only people are cruel

Kayzr · 23/02/2012 14:26

That's disgusting. I'd hate to think that someone is walking round a cemetery taking the piss out of my grandparents names.

ledkr · 23/02/2012 14:31

uh oh. Op are you new to Mumsnet. I should name change and start again. Despite our "nest of vipers" reputation we are actually fairly civil to one another and you might have guessed someone would be offended by your thread.

MamaLazarou · 23/02/2012 14:37

"all names are beautiful"

Hmm

Agree that this is a pointless thread. And I quite like Raymond.
