I'd avoid initials BJ. How about William James, with Billy as nickname? Or otherwise a different middle name.

DaveCat · 04/02/2012 15:36

Thanks, the BJ bit is bothering me but I don't like William. Can't think of anything that goes with Billy though!

Would never ever have made that connection with those initials! Am I so innocent??

toobreathless · 04/02/2012 15:59

Billy Ellis
Billy Evan
Billy Charles
Billy Ethan
Billy Frederick

Or what about using Billy as the middle name & calling him that, or would this be too confusing?

Somersaults · 04/02/2012 16:09

My cousin is Billy David.

PopcornBiscuit · 04/02/2012 16:13

Billy George
Billy Ryan
Billy Samuel
Billy Austin
Billy Dunstan
Billy Aidan
Billy Francis
Billy Scott
Billy Maxwell
Billy Owen
Billy Thomas
Billy Isaac

(Not Elliott, Joel, Piper or Graham!)

Billy is just awful as a nickname - to use as a full name would just be awful. And trust me - BJ would so be picked up on.

Bunbaker · 04/02/2012 18:21

If you choose Billy people will assume, whether you like it or not, that his full name is William. I used to know a man called Bill and his surname began with an O Smile, but he was probably called William at birth.

scottishmummy · 04/02/2012 18:23

Billy James is ghastly. I imagine a six finger banjo player with that name.

DaveCat · 04/02/2012 18:54

Thanks for all your comments - helpful and some not so helpful.

makes me think of gypsies (dd had a billy james in her class who was a gypsy)

pixelpeeper · 04/02/2012 19:12

My brother has the initials BJ and the only person that ever took the piss was me Grin

BiggerAndBadder · 04/02/2012 19:27

reminds me of a cowboy film name

husband called william as a middle name and has always been Bill (he hates billy which in our part of the country a lot of people call him when they know he is 'bill')

SlinkingOutsideInFrocks · 04/02/2012 19:32

Why Billy?

I don't have particularly strong feelings on shortened versions of names being used on birth certificates - although would never do it myself - but Billy....?

How to say this delicately. Well, there's no way to really, and you did ask for opinions... It's a bit of a hick name. It has no substance. Fine as a nickname, if the owner chooses it himself. But to be saddled with it as a given name?

I certainly wouldn't thank you.

PopcornBiscuit · 04/02/2012 20:56

"If you choose Billy people will assume, whether you like it or not, that his full name is William."

Agree.

BillyBollyBandy · 04/02/2012 22:47

OI Billy is a lovely name Wink

Billy James reminds me of Billie Jean though.

scottishmummy · 04/02/2012 22:53

Billie Jean, sung by whited gloved dubious musician.fond of chimps and children

yes,great reference point

nooka · 05/02/2012 05:54

I'd be ore concerned about Billy Goat Gruff teasing. I don't really mind Billy as a nick name, but really don't think it's good on it's own. I also suspect that there may also be more little girls called Billie and than little boys called Billy.

AlpinePony · 05/02/2012 07:16

Until I read this thread it never occurred to me that my husband is in fact 'BJ'.

Well that's today's piss-taking sorted.

randomimposter · 05/02/2012 08:17

I have a William and I'm not wild about the name either, but it has deep significance for me, and for now DS (3) is Billy. I suspect will engineer that he'll be Will as a teen onwards. But actually if he wants to stay Billy, I guess that's ok. The problem is not much does run well with Billy without C&W connotations ...

Littlepurpleprincess · 06/02/2012 10:40

I LOVE the name Billy James, and I didn't notice the BJ issue until you pointed it out. I would use William though with Billy for a NN. Just incase he grows up to be a solicitor or brain surgeon. Billy the brain surgeon just ain't right....

tammytoby · 06/02/2012 13:50

I'm not keen on Billy at all, I'm afraid. But to answer your question, no I wouldnt' give him initials BJ.

(I also don't get how Billy is a nickname for William, it is William, not Billiam Grin).

tammytoby · 06/02/2012 13:51

I'd also worry about the teasing potential - Silly Billy Willy etc.
