Spike

DH really likes the name Spike for a boy. I'm not keen at all as I think it's a bit "try hard". Is this a bit unfair of me?

I would like to agree with you notmostpeople and wish it wasnt the case but I can think of at least one example out of people I know and I wasn't even thinking hard! The bloke im thinking of calls himself by his initial only due to people's reaction when he says his name

What a lot of tosh whoever said it would shut doors professionally. It's a name you can't explain to HR suitable for the job but he isn't getting it due to name. There is employment law you know.

I know an Alfie spike and he is so cool, little proper star.

I love the name Spike, there was one in ds's class (he'll be 12 now) He's the son of someone in a indie group. not that I knew that until I took my ds to one of Spike's birthday parties!

He was a really nice kid.

PS the association with Spike from Buffy just makes it better imo

Thank you MN jury - a majority against I see. BalloonSlayer that's really interesting re the army nickname thing - I was wondering how Spike Milligan got saddled with it.

Definitely sticking to my guns on this - I like Spike even less now it's been pointed out that it's a dog's name. DH will have to go back to the drawing board.

That's really interesting, BalloonSlayer. There are lots of traditional Navy nicknames, usually attached to surnames (for example, anyone with the surname Walker is called Hooky) but I didn't know that Spike was an army nickname - I always wondered how Spike Milligan ended up being Spike. You're right, a little chubby Spike would be a bit of an anomaly.
The only Spike I've known in real life was the child of a new-age travelling family. He was not a child I warmed to, and his parents were the epitome of "try-hard", so I probably have more of a downer on a name than I would have done otherwise.

It's not just a dog's name, but the name of the slightly stupid bulldog/boxer/whatever-he-is in Tom and Jerry cartoons .

Someone else on MN has a Spike, and he was cute as a button.

I have an Ike and we often call him Spike - I wasn't brave enough to name him Spike.

But if you don't like it, don't use it. I think it's a marmite name.

As a Costello fan,as you could prob tell from my nickname,I love the name Spike.I wanted it for our son,but went with Dexter instead.However,I was delighted when Costello called one of his twin sons Dexter!

Seriously, I wouldn't make it the first name. Middle or nickname, ok. Buffy's Spike was named William (The Bloody)
