If you've got a William...

Does he get teased from other boys at school. I love the name William but have a nagging doubt about him getting the whole 'willy' thing in the playground.

Is it not such a problem now as it's in the top 10 so there are too many about to tease?

I'm due in 2 weeks and can't decide what to do.

I think that children find something to tease every child about. It's a fab name - go for it.

Sparklingbrook · 28/01/2012 19:46

Most of the Williams I know get called 'Will' at school.

The William (Will) in my ds's class (Y2) does get called Willy, I 'm afraid. It is inevitable amongst silly, childish schoolboys imo.

BuntyPenfold · 28/01/2012 21:37

My William got endless teasing. At age 6 he insisted on using his middle name at school, and at 16 he changed it by deed poll.

Indith · 28/01/2012 21:39

Mine is in reception so I suppose there is plenty of time for teasing but there hasn't been any yet.

GetDownNesbitt · 28/01/2012 21:45

I taught a Willy. How cruel can you get?

flopsy1974 · 28/01/2012 21:53

My William is known as Will to his friends. It's a fabulous name, strong and classic Smile

drippyVaJjandVagBean · 28/01/2012 21:57

My cousins called William, fantastic name, I'd have used it for my own ds had it not been 'taken' he's nearly 12 and hasn't had any name related teasing yet. He is often called Will/wills.

PotteringAlong · 28/01/2012 21:59

My William in only 8 weeks old so at the moment no problems at all! :)

Catz1 · 28/01/2012 22:01

My eldest boy is now 12 and hs friends have called him Will for about 3 years now. It was always Willam before and my father calls him Wills.
He has never been known as Willy and it's a fab name.

Good luck.

Viewofthehills · 28/01/2012 22:03

My William is 12,usually Will. No problem with his name, but has been teased and called other names altogether. Just proving that if a kid reacts they will find a way to get to him,but it's a great name, I still love it.

KWL51 · 28/01/2012 22:07

My William will be 10 on Tuesday and other than his older brother no one has called him willy! He's William or will, sometime willheim just to annoy him.

1973magpie · 28/01/2012 22:17

My William is three and goes by the name of Bill. I think kids will find something to tease about whatever you are called! The other William's I have known have been either Will or Bill/Billy. Fantastic name.

rachel234 · 28/01/2012 22:46

I dislike will as a name because it is a verb as in "Will, will you..." Also a last will.

But I agree - Willy is worse!

LionsnTigersnBears · 28/01/2012 23:14

call him Bill for short?

Tikketyboo · 28/01/2012 23:19

I have an 8 year old William I always call him William he gets called will or wills at school (he prefer wills) his Nana calls him Billy.
He has never been called Willy. :)

MeltingChocolateBunnies · 29/01/2012 20:55

Thank you ladies,
That has been good to hear.
Bunty I'm sorry to hear things were so tough for your DS, it must have been very hard for you all.

pilates · 30/01/2012 18:06

I wouldn't let that put you off.

William is a great name and love the nn Will

justhayley · 30/01/2012 18:44

My DPs a William but has always been known as Will - his dad is also one but was known as Liam. I don't think he ever got any willy jokes

CheerfulYank · 30/01/2012 18:50

I don't know any who get that but then again, we don't say willy for penis in America. :) Peter, on the other hand...

hellokitty123 · 31/01/2012 13:07

As nice as William may be, both nicknames Will (noun, verb) or Willy (penis) are both not very attractive as names imo. I think silly school aged boys will probably find Willy jokes in relation to a Will/William irresistable. But then lots of names can be made fun of with a little imagination (althoug to get from Will to Willy you don't need much Grin).

0000000003mom · 31/01/2012 19:45

I have a little William that insists his name is not shortened & people generally respect his wishes otherwise he just ignores them lol it's a name that's grown on me but now I love it & it was a good choice

Cewafwb · 05/02/2012 15:21

I have a William (Y3) and he is William at home and some of his friends try to call him Will but it doesn't seem to last. Never ever heard of anyone called William being called Willy.
