What does a 'Rufus' look like?

I know Rufus means red-headed, so would it be daft to name a child if you don't expect it to be red-headed?

Would you expect a rufus to be chunky, rough and tumble, or tall and gangly?

Help needed please!

(ps - not for me - so feel free to be rude about the name!)

In all honesty I would expect a Rufus to look like <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=shaggy+dog&hl=en&gbv=2&biw=1680&bih=925&tbm=isch&tbnid=NKrzN8ua1qHbpM:&imgrefurl=blogs.reuters.com/oddly-enough/2007/02/26/heavy-petting-online-love-me-love-my-dogs/&docid=iI5H4cM4kyyeeM&imgurl=blogs.reuters.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/02/luke%252520head.jpg&w=300&h=293&ei=asYST_vIC9PY8gPX4OnlAw&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=1254&vpy=592&dur=1413&hovh=222&hovw=227&tx=118&ty=130&sig=117046156485466299592&page=1&tbnh=171&tbnw=174&start=0&ndsp=29&ved=1t:429,r:27,s:0" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">this.

Rufus Wainwright

missnevermind · 15/01/2012 12:43

Hairy with four legs!

duchesse · 15/01/2012 12:50

My gorgeous 13 yo nephew is actually red-haired, but would have been Rufus even if he hadn't been. He is sorted of named after another gorgeous dark-haired adult Rufus, friend of my sister and ex-BIL. I have only positive associations with the name.

Just because people give people-names to pets don't make it a pet's name. My neighbours have dogs named Ellie and Molly- does that make them dog names? Felix is also a lovely boy's name but people will insist on associating it with cats. Tibbles and Rascal are pets' names, Rufus and Felix are most definitely people names.

TheFirstMrsGClooney · 15/01/2012 12:52

A bit like Jesus probably. Not a dog's name IMO though.

TubbyDuffs · 15/01/2012 12:52

I know a hairy four legged one, and also knew a rather good looking (non-redheaded) lad at school too.

I like the name for beast or child.

TidyDancer · 15/01/2012 12:54

Totally agree with Bunny. My first thought before even clicking on the thread was 'dog'.

TheBolter · 15/01/2012 12:57

A dog

GoForBaroque · 15/01/2012 12:59

Either tall, dark and preppy (think junior doctor in an expensive pink rugby shirt) or a bit like Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall

senua · 15/01/2012 13:06

This is what a Rufus looks like. Grin

GoForBaroque · 15/01/2012 13:12

Hubba Grin

lollystix · 15/01/2012 13:55

What Bunny said...

saturdayescape · 15/01/2012 13:59

Cracking name. My friend has a lovley tall but chunky Rufus, he is blond. I didn't know it meant red headed.

TeaandHobnobs · 15/01/2012 14:00

It is my little BIL's name, he fits GoForBaroque's description of tall, dark and preppy. He is charming and gorgeous Wink

susiedaisy · 15/01/2012 14:03

hairy, with four legs with a wagging tail whos always pleased to see you!! Smile

AmberLeaf · 15/01/2012 14:03

Bunny beat me to it!

I was going to go for an Irish wolfhound though.

SoFarWeAreEqual · 15/01/2012 14:16

I love the name Rufus.

Rufus Sewell is just gorgeous and a miniature version of him would be no bad thing. Intelligent, good looking, talented - need I go on?

It most definitely does not say dog to me - Sam, Molly, Ella etc. are dogs' names IMO.

ellesabe · 15/01/2012 14:22

I think a Rufus needs a shaggy haircut

scottishmummy · 15/01/2012 14:25

Quinoa munching parents
Boy with long hair, organic fair trade quirky but obvious clothes
All bit too right on

pixiestix · 15/01/2012 14:26

Posh and a bit gangly.

StillSquiffy · 15/01/2012 14:38

Rough & tumble type with shaggy hair a bit too long, and posh manners. Public school but most definitely not the Eton type.

Love the '..us' type names. Gus, Angus, Cassius. All v cool IMO

nulgirl · 15/01/2012 14:40

My parent's dog is called rufus. Very cute face and gangly legs. .

guinealady · 15/01/2012 15:28

Rufus Sewell and/or Wainwright - yes please! It's a great name no matter what your hair colour.

phlossie · 15/01/2012 16:18

Mine's blonde - click my name and see his picture! He's big, tall and chunky and very clever and gorgeous!

(I love Rufus Sewell, btw!)
