Voldemars and a female version?

Davyveel · 10/01/2012 21:12

I'm due very soon.
My Dad died when I was 20 and we are naming DC after him.

Voldemars (my family and me are Latvian - basically it is the Latvian version of Vladimir)

So we need a female version (that doesn't exist)
And also DH is a bit worried about the the Volde part (as in mort)

Thanks

Lovely to remember your dad in this way but sorry, Voldemort was my first thought too.
Could you give your daughter it as a middle name?

bodiddly · 10/01/2012 21:17

I'm afraid I agree ... Voldemort was the first thing I thought of. I think that your child would have a bit of a hard time at school with that name.

Volda?

SoupDragon · 10/01/2012 21:18

I really think it is too close to Voldemort.

p.s Voldemort didn't even occur to me! not everyone, esp in many years to come, will have heard of/read/seen HP

debka · 10/01/2012 21:20

O gosh, that's a challenge. How about Violet?

CrotchFlakes · 10/01/2012 21:21

Can you find another way to honour your dad? Too Harry Potter. Way too much.

squeak2392 · 10/01/2012 21:21

Could you not use Vladimir instead?

How about Velda for a girl?

thisisyesterday · 10/01/2012 21:24

did your dad have a middle name? and what about surname? anything you could do with that?

Lonnie · 10/01/2012 21:38

Vonda for a girl?

Or the Danish Waldemar

TheAvocadoOfWisdom · 10/01/2012 21:41

Valeska? meaning splendid leader. I know it's the feminine of Vladislav not Vladimir but it's close.

Davyveel · 10/01/2012 21:44

Um Juris was his middle name and he hated it (he was named after his dad).

Surname is still my surname and is long with bizarre letters and spellings (at least in english) plus we are still talking about what surname DCs will have.

I know I wont get a female name that is latvian like Voldemars and am okay about that but as I can have a Latvian boys name, I don't really want one that isn' latvian which Vladimir is.

Thanks for the suggestions keep them coming

I too was thinking Valdemar. Valdemara? Tricky one.

Carlitawantsababy · 10/01/2012 21:51

I really like Juris, very cool. The Voldemort thing is going to be a challenge as I think the next generation of children will read them (I plan to read them with my son who is currently in utero!) it was my first thought. Then again, it's not that bad being nick named after an evil character, could be quite cool? The baby who must not be named! Grin

nooka · 11/01/2012 04:05

What about Valdis? Apparently it's a short form for Voldemars. I really think that might be a very difficult name to carry off.

guinealady · 11/01/2012 11:37

As well as Velda there's also Velma (I know, I know, Scooby Doo) and also Vendela - there is a US author called Vendela Vida which I think is just the coolest name!

browneyesblue · 11/01/2012 11:45

How about Marsha? It's a variant spelling of Marcia, derived from Latin meaning "dedicated to Mars".

fanjodisfunction · 12/01/2012 12:06

How about Demi for a girl or Demars for a boy?

titchy · 12/01/2012 12:12

Hmmm - How about Voldemara, but known as Mara?
