Woops sorry girls re the author error lol!! Love all those sort of names, we have our names chosen but I love all those prim & proper boarding school type names-amazing how many of them are experiencing a revival!
Edith Weston I am like you I read all those books plus the secret 7 & famous 5 and all I can rememer is Dick from the famous 5-can't see that becoming too popular any time soon then again......

I predict the revival of Sybil(thanks for posting Kate F) especially with Sybil in Downton-lovely character & so pretty!

I have a complete set of both upstairs, so can go and look.

Personally, I liked Kathy (Ferrars) and Rosamund (Lilley). Both Chalet.
But you can get double points if you use Mary-Lou because there is one in both Chalet at Mallory Towers.

Auntiestablishment · 06/01/2012 19:20

Chalet and Mallory Towers.

Polkadotfanatic · 06/01/2012 20:39

Famous Five - Julian, Dick and Anne, George (girl) and Timmy the dog. Uncle Quentin too.

Secret Seven (dusts cobwebs) Peter, Janet, Colin, George, Barbara, Pam, Jack. Then there was the annoying bitch irritating younger sister Susie with her best friend who had a name like Twinkle or something odd...

This thread makes me feel old and young at the same time!! :)

Why did they always have potted meat sandwiches and condensed milk and why was that always classed as a ''feast''.... :)

How about the Faraway Tree- Moonface or Silky anyone?!

pranma · 06/01/2012 21:08

What about the Abbey School-some lovely names there once you get past Joan,Joy and Jen[Janet]
lots of 'Rose' names can't be bothered to scour shelves but Rosamund inspired a Rosabel,Rosalyn,Rosella etc etc

boyfallingoutofthesky · 06/01/2012 21:57

Pat and Isobel and their cousin Daphne (or was that St Clare's?)
Strangely, Isobel seemed dated then.
Also at St Clare's lots of direct equivalents to the Mallory Towers lot: Bobby (the tomboy), Doris (the clown) Claudine (the dippy French one). I think there was a wet French girl called Suzanne in Mallory Towers who wasn't as good as Claudine. And her sister Antoinette.
Was also a character in Mallory Towers called Alma Pudden (who ate a lot)

Gwendoline, I've only read a few chalet schools but think they are AWFUL. Religious, soppy- Jo and her friends are sooo boring. The plot in every book seems to centre on someone getting very sick and recovering. Oh, and in one book the girls set up a branch of the kkk in order to scare off a rival school. Lovely Hmm

SecretNutellaFix · 07/01/2012 09:33

trying to leave- you haven't read the books properly, of course they didn't! The two american girls make mention of the KKK and they look at what they did.

There was also the incident in one of the books where they have to flee Austria for attempting to save the life of a Jewish watchmaker.

lizziebennet · 07/01/2012 09:38

The Robin's real name was Marya I believe .

seeker · 07/01/2012 10:05

The Robin was Marya Cecelia, I think.

EdithWeston · 07/01/2012 10:22

For those who might be interested, girls school books were discussed in this thread in FWR.

They had clearly been read and enjoyed by many, and the Chalet School in particular attracted quite a lot of positive comments (despite the limits on possibilities for women at that time) as it showed a world in which the female characters and their decisions and actions were important and valued.

tryingtoleave · 07/01/2012 11:48

They did! The book was 'the rivals of the chalet school'. I remember clearly that they borrowed some of joey's 'elsie' books to read up on the kkk, and they all felt a thrill as they read of the deeds of 'the far famed clan' or something to that effect... I suspect I still have that book somewhere- might have to go search it out and crash the other thread too, while I'm at it.

tryingtoleave · 07/01/2012 11:50

And, the chalet school mothers all seems very into training their babies in a truby king kind of way. There were always references to how they had been trained properly to stay in their cots from early on and not to expect to be picked up.

TheCrunchUnderfoot · 07/01/2012 11:57

Daphne... the thief who came good!

ElaineReese · 07/01/2012 12:06

Mavis of the Voice.

tryingtoleave · 07/01/2012 12:11

Elaine, you must be an Antonia forest fan? Those are the best school stories, I think - they transcend the genre. Miranda is a name I could happily use for a dd, just because I love Miranda west so much.

ElaineReese · 07/01/2012 12:16

Absolutely! I don't know why I gave myself the name of the least charismatic and dimmest Kingscotian, but there we go!

tryingtoleave · 07/01/2012 12:19

Pp 30-31 of Rivals. The girls are forbidden to start a feud against St scholastika's so Evadne suggests that they call themselves the kkk instead, because then it wouldn't be a feud, they would just be 'fighting for our rights'.

Of course, all they do as the kkk is to force the other girls off the path so they get wet tights and catch colds. Because the chalet school girls are WET.
