Does anyone really call their child Jocasta?

I ask because it's always the MN name people trot out to describe unbearably entitled children with pushy parents and I've never, ever met one or (to my eternal sadness) heard it being called out in the playground.

Am I missing out?

I know 2 Jacinthes but have never met a Jocasta.

I use Jocasta as a catch all name for the child of pushy/entitled/deluded parents because Jeremy Hardy does.

DH has a cook book called the "paupers cookbook" by Jocasta Innes. that title with that author is so brilliant it should be in the 'examples of snobbery' thread!

Rachel it's a quirk of the English language and the British mind that we can create a word to stand as shorthand for a whole concept which can be easily understood by many people. It's why English is so rich in metaphors. Anyway, as per greenmoo's comment it's clearly all about perception not reality.

Poor name! I do like it, though no way DH would let it in the shortlist for my bump...

I've had The Pauper's Cookbook since I was a student, it is legendary! There are several recipes in there that I constantly return to.

@startail

DH has a cook book called the "paupers cookbook" by Jocasta Innes. His mum gave it him to go to university.
I met her once, she was very rich and posh Grin

@feelingratheroverwhelmed

The Pobble's Aunt is called Jobiska 😁
Jocasta is a beautiful name (even though Oedipus possibly makes it tease-worthy).

I love this name but I really don’t think I could get past her character’s story in Greek mythology. Shame because it is a very nice name. Didn’t know it had any other connotations though to be honest so this is news to me!

I like the name Jocasta. Not enough to actually use it I don’t think but I do like it. The big downside to me is the likelihood it would be shortened to Jo or Josie which I don’t like, the alternative I guess is Cassie but I don’t love that either.
