What D You Think Of Lena?

I am pregnant with DC3. I think it will be a 3rd boy, but DH is convinced it is a girl.
We both like Kathleen, but I much prefer Lena, which could be used as NN. DH thinks this is a weird name, that no-one will have heard of before, and won't know how to spell or pronounce it! I think it is a normal name. I am from Rep. Ireland, he is English. Maybe it is not so common in England...what do you think?

Im Irish too and have just posted another threadwondering how to give Mary an edge!! I love all the old names and I love Kathleen, has so many lovely nn e.g Kath, Kathy and Lena is fab. Hubbys friendis married to a Lena and she is from the Ukraine and its meant to be a very popular nn in the former soviet union for Elena:) Go for it girl! Kathleen & Lena beautiful!

I think it's a normal name, but then there are 2 in my family Smile (older people, but as full names not nicknames). I personally like it better as a NN than a full name. Your future dd may get the occasional person who spells it Lina or pronounces it Layna, but really is that such a huge problem? I have a fairly common name myself and have had it misspelt and mispronounced hundreds of times. So what? Pick the name you like.

My nan was nanna Lena. Her full name was Eluned.

My great-grandmother was Kathleen, known as Lena. A fabulous lady by all accounts. I'm Irish too though! I think both are lovely.

I think Lena is lovely. I have a Danish friend called Lena but it is spelt Line. My mum is Irish and her name is Kathleen. She has always been called Kahlie - pronounced cally Smile

I know it as a name in its own right and as a nn for Eleanor and Elena. I grew up in Germany and knew lots of Lenas there, but haven't met any over here in the UK. I think its a lovely name.

poppydaisy · 05/01/2012 19:51

Lena is quite popular in Germany - I like it.

I knew a lena at uni. Lovely feminine sounding. The lena I knew was from Sweden!
