discussing names for a potential dd

i really like the name miranda nn miri or mims .dh does not like it as he is worried about the possible nn randy . he loves the name arabella . i'm not overly keen . i do quite like mirabel /le/la and it does seem like a possible compromise . dh is still adamant that arabella is the one . dh has suggested we could put mirabella on the birth cert and he could use arabel/arabella as his nn for her and i could use miri or belle/a .

i think this will just cause her a life time of confusion . what do the mumsnet jury think ?

They say a child who is loved has many names. I doubt it would work in practice but I don't think shed suffer dim having more then one known name.

RillaBlythe · 03/01/2012 15:07

Dim? From!

CecilyP · 03/01/2012 15:08

Well, I'm already confused. Also, seems odd that Miranda makes DH think of randy. I like Miranda - think it is pretty - don't like the other 2.

ShesAStar · 03/01/2012 15:26

It won't confuse her at all. My son is called a different name by most members of the family as was I and also my brother. My son's name is Leo, he gets called Lou Lou, Lou, Louby, Little Egg and Ernie by various members of the family, he is only 3 and has always realised they are referring to him. Most of the nick names refer to his middle name which is Louie after a family member.

JestersHat · 03/01/2012 16:18

Arabella and Mirabelle are both very pretty. How about Miriam or Annabelle?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/01/2012 16:21

I think it is a silly idea tbh. Miranda is also a much, much nicer name than Arabella and Mirabella is horrible!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/01/2012 16:22

But really, I think you will probably need to compromise on a different name - How about Marianne?

Mirabella is lovely its my no1 name on my list if BB is a girl. I was going to call her Mimi for short as there are far to many Bellas around. Niece is Miranda and she loves it, she gets alot of Mirry for short....

ShowOfHands · 03/01/2012 16:25

What about Mirabel or Miriam?

MildlyNarkyPuffin · 03/01/2012 16:33

Mirabella makes me think of horses for some reason Hmm

Compromises are good, but not when it comes to names - it just means a name no-one really wanted, and in your DH's case, apparently he's just going to call her what he wanted to anyway!!! If he's going to do that you might as well call her Bob, nn Arabella!

Xmasbaby11 · 03/01/2012 16:34

I wouldn't deliberately choose two different names as that is confusing. Start with one that you both like and nicknames will arise from this naturally.

guinealady · 03/01/2012 16:34

Mirabel or Mirabella much nicer than Arabella imo!

Miranda is our top name choice at the moment, with perhaps Mimi or Min/Minnie as nn - but I do also like Mirabel a lot. If you can persuade your OH to drop Arabella I'd go for it!

oikopolis · 03/01/2012 16:34

I'm all for nicknames. But DH using an entirely different name is just strange.

I'd look for another name. Or go with Arabella, it's perfectly respectable.

ChippingInLovesChristmasLights · 03/01/2012 16:40

Nicknames that just happen are lovely - but starting out calling your DD two different names is just daft, it really is. Find one you both like!
