Please help us decide out of the following (good and bad comments welcome), thank you:-

Abigail
Freya
Hannah
Ava

James
Finley
Jacob
Samuel

I worry too much about what nicknames school kids may think up but as hubby says kids will always think of a horrible nickname if they really want to.

I like Hannah... And I like James and Samuel....
The rest are nice names but I don't like them as much. Grin

LizzieChickens · 02/01/2012 14:31

I think they're all lovely.

JollySantaJackrum · 02/01/2012 14:35

I like them all except Hannah. Lovely names :)

3boysgirlontheway · 02/01/2012 16:11

Freya for a girl and Finley for a boy are my favourites from your list.

Would not personally consider Ava or Jacob, they are far too popular in my area.

DigOfTheStump · 02/01/2012 16:16

I dn't like Ava, rest are all great.

hohohoshedittant · 02/01/2012 16:17

They're all quite popular. I know at least two of each (under 12's). All nice though. My favourites would be Abigail or Hannah and Jacob or Finley.

Dee03 · 02/01/2012 16:19

Love Freya and Ava...
Sorry but not keen on any of the boys names.... Too popular and I like names that are a bit different....
Smile

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/01/2012 17:02

None of the girls' names excite me at all tbh (but Hannah is the best) but I like all of the boys' names except Finley.

flopsy1974 · 02/01/2012 18:16

Abigail and Hannah are lovely as are James and Samuel. Not so keen on the others. Ava seems very popular where I live Smile.

coronet · 02/01/2012 18:19

Abigail - I really love this
Freya - used to be my favourite name, but have gone it due to popularity. it feels a bit lightweight for some reason.
Hannah - really like it
Ava - too popular

James - lovely (Jamie also gorgeous)
Finley - popular
Jacob - lovely name, very very popular
Samuel - beautiful name, would have had this on my shortlist but already in the family.

Sannebanana · 02/01/2012 19:16

Abigail- really like this, but do you like Abby? She'll probably be called this by someone at some point

Freya- really pretty, don't think it's too popular at the moment though it is in the top 50

Hannah- personally I don't like it, but that might just be me

Ava- lovely name, trouble is there are so many of them. Plus it's very similar to Eva/Evie/Eve/Evelyn, and there are loads of them at the moment too.

James- really like this, suits babies and adults :)

Finley- nice, but very popular around here, don't know about where you live.

Jacob- like this one too but I think it's quite popular

Samuel- nice, classic one, it is quite popular but not majorly so.

My favourites are Freya and James :)

AnotherMincepie · 02/01/2012 19:38

Abigail - lovely, classic Biblical name
Freya - faddy, dislike
Hannah - nice classic name
Ava - Eve/Evie/Ava/Eva are very popular at the moment

James - like
Finley - dislike, faddy and reminds me of fish
Jacob - OK
Samuel - like

Ihatecbeebies · 02/01/2012 19:54

I love Finley and Samuel.

Ihatecbeebies · 02/01/2012 19:56

I like all of the girls name too, infact all of the names you've chosen are lovely Smile but my favourite are Samuel and Finley

oikopolis · 02/01/2012 20:09

Abigail - nice
Freya - nice
Hannah - ok. Prefer Anna.
Ava - nice

James - nice
Finley - not keen. Trendy-sounding.
Jacob - nice
Samuel - ok. not keen on "Sam", so personally not my style.

...Honestly they're all usable, my criticisms are more about personal taste. :)

Hassled · 02/01/2012 20:11

Of the girls' names, I prefer Freya, I think. Ava is also nice.
Of the boys' - James.

welshhouse · 02/01/2012 20:13

Thanks for your input so far. We just seem to be stuck at the moment. I love the name James but then I worry that people may shorten it to Jim which I hate.

OP posts:
AnotherMincepie · 02/01/2012 22:05

Most of the Jameses (?) I know are just called James. If there's a nickname I know of more Jamies than Jims.

Hulababy · 02/01/2012 22:09

Abigail - very popular here; nn likely to be Abi (or other spelling of this); personally not keen
Freya - ok; not sure what nn would be
Hannah - nice name; also like Anna. No nn for people I know with either name
Ava - have known this pronounced Ah-va and Ay-va; never known a nn; not sure personally

James - ok; nn could be Jamie or Jim maybe although don't like later
Finley - ok, nn Fin
Jacob- like this but not keen on nn Jake
Samuel - nice, nn Sam, or Sammy but less keen on later

cupcaketrix · 02/01/2012 22:38

Love Abigail, shortened to Abi. That was our first choice, but unfortunately it's also my SIL first choice who is due day after me so whoever pops first gets it! Finley is also our boys first choice so they both get my vote!

Think that Jamie is nicer than James x

lollystix · 02/01/2012 22:49

Freya, Ava, Hannah very popular and of the moment in my view- they'll be the Louise, Julie and Sarah's of the 70's IYKWIM. Abigail stands apart slightly.

Jacob, Finley also very common too as per above. James classic but very safe and Sam is ok but also a bit popular

Sorry - just my opinion - all a matter of personal taste though
