Since I was about 11 my fav boys name has been Joshua DP hates it but doesn't mind Josh, what do we think (yes we, I can no longer think as an individual) about Josh, does it sound abit unfinished?
Also can I have some ideas for middle names to go with Josh please.

Thank you x

Mine was Josh when i was little too. Not anymore but i still think it's a nice name.

Haribolicious · 31/12/2011 21:07

We have a Josh....felt exactly the same as your DP....hate Joshua but really liked Josh! It suits us and doesn't feel unfinished as we prefer short names.

It sounds really unfinished and strange to me, sorry.

AnotherMincepie · 01/01/2012 10:33

Yes, it sounds unfinished and most people will assume it's short for Joshua.

CecilyP · 01/01/2012 10:37

Think it is fine and was in the top 200 for 2010, so there must be other parents who feel the same way.

TidyDancer · 01/01/2012 10:43

Oh I really don't like it as a 'complete' name, you're right, it sounds unfinished. Why not just have Joshua as the full name and Josh as the shortened every day version? You won't find many people who don't ask "is that short for Joshua?", which will get annoying very quickly for the poor lad.

ChasingSquirrels · 01/01/2012 10:46

Mine is a Joshua but has never been called that (weird as when pg it was always Joshua and I had no plans to shorten). If I was naming him now I would just use Josh.

onelittleclara · 01/01/2012 10:53

I have a Joshua Alexander but never wanted him to be a Josh, but that is what he is called mostly now, or Joshie even by me. I think you'll be fine to call him by the full version and still get your wish

ceebeegeebies · 01/01/2012 11:01

It does sound a bit 'unfinished' to me aswell - why not register him as Joshua but never use the full version?

I love the name which is why we used it for DS1 but rarely call him Joshua and even asked his teacher not to call him that as it is not his 'name' iyswim. DS2 also has a 3-syllable first name as his registered name but I can honestly say we have never used the full version and neither has anyone else - he is and always has been 'Sam' Smile

I actually think a short middle name is better with a 3-syllable first name like Joshua so we chose Luke - but if he is going to be just Josh, then yes, I think you would need a longer middle name.

Montsti · 01/01/2012 11:58

I always wanted to call a son of mine Joshua but then moved to a "new world" country and it seemed too popular/new world to me and I suddenly came over all English and wanted a very English-sounding name if that makes sense!

Anyway personally I prefer longer/full names and then use the shortened form as a nn...but that's just me and we all have different tastes! One of my friends has just had a little boy and she called him Josh too (not Joshua)...

If you do go for Josh I agree that a longer mn would work better - Alexander...I do think having a nicknamey first name sounds a bit funny with any middle name...again just my opinion.. If Joshua I love Joshua James!

Unfortunately have taught far too many Joshes to have positive feelings about either Josh or Joshua. DiL has had the same experience and vetoed it for our GS.

I have a family member called Joshua and he has never in his life been called anything other than Josh. I hate shortened names on the birth cert so I'd have to go with full name and use other for everyday. I feel the same about Katie/Catherine etc
