Baby due next Friday, just looking for some ideas as to what grandmas are called these days? DHs mum is happy with "mammar" (think that's a regional thing - we're from Notts - but my mum doesn't like it, she also says nan or gran makes her sound old!! I just used to call mine Grandma (name)!! Any more ideas??

On my side we're got Grandad X (our surname) and Mamgu (South Welsh grandma).

On my DH's side, his mother insisted she not be called anything grandma related as she doesn't want to be made to feel old (she's over 70...). So she tries to get our DD to call her by her name. Instead my DD calls her Aunty X which I find hilarious, but confirms for me that it's confusing not calling her a granny type name. My FIL has settled for Grandad X (his first name) and is very chuffed about it.

My parents are Nanna and Grandad and my in-laws are Granny and Grandpa.

Nanny and Grandpa, my mother refused to be called granny which I like but she thinks it makes her sound old.

We have Nainy (welsh) and grumpy (true). he wouldnt choose what he wanted to be called so he has always just been grumpy. when DS is older he will probably use grumps or Taid (welsh)

PotteringAlong · 02/01/2012 19:05

Grandma and grandad
Nain and Taid

Also use moonpig! :)

exoticfruits · 02/01/2012 19:13

Just ask the grandparents what they want.

trinitybleu · 02/01/2012 21:07

Grandma and Grandad [his first name], Nanna Boat and Grumpy/Grandad Boat (they live aboard a boat), and Grandad [first name]. I wanted different names for each to make things easier, but completely failed iro the grandads!

mildertduck · 04/01/2012 19:04

Mine: Grandma K and Granda D (maternal); Nana S and Granda B (paternal)
(I am so pleased to hear of other Grandas!)

His: Granny and Grandpapa (shortened to GPP) (maternal); Grandma and Grandpa (paternal)

Grandchild is still gestating but his parents want to be Granny and Grandpa; mine want to be Mops and Pops...

SkiBumMum · 04/01/2012 22:24

Grammy & Grandpa
Grandma & Grandad
Nanny (great grandmother)
Gigi (other gg who at 94 declared great grandma made her sound old and after a few weeks changed spelling from GG as more glamorous Grin)

LanceCorporalBoiledEgg · 04/01/2012 22:28

Granny and Grandad
Nanna
Grandpa

We let the Grandparents choose their own names :)
