Quinn

Our little boy is due in about 10 days, still undecided on names. After a long search through a baby book, DH has suggested Quinn. Not 100% sure on this but do not have any other real favourites.

What do you think? Any other suggestions welcome!

I'd prefer Quinton or Quentin. Quinn by itself looks a bit too much like quim, and I think that might be difficult to live with.

Ooh v unusual! I like it! Looks really Nice written down. Other ideas: Zola, Reuben, Erasmus if you like something a bit out of the ordinary.

I really like it! As long as it flows well with the surname, I think it's lovely! It's nice and unusual - I only know of two, a 2yo and an 18yo, and they both really suit it IMO. I think it's the sort of name that is sweet on a toddler but ages well too.

To summarise; much gender confusion with a small majority seeing it as better as a boy's name, some dislike of surnames as first names and, look up the word 'quim' in a dictionary - you may not be familiar with it and isn't in common use in spoken English but a lot of people are and their reaction to the name will range from a bit surprised to quite shocked.

There's a nasty scene in rob Roy where quim is used and that's enough for me to not like the name. Too close for comfort!

I think of the mighty Quinn! And I feel its a boys name. ds has what dome would perceive as a surname as a first name and there is also a female character in some American show I've never watched with his name but we have only had positive comments. and its the surname of a former prime minister!

There will always be 2 camps on mn when it comes to names. if you like it go for it.

I had forgotten all about Glee, there could a be a rise in popularity for girls, DH is not a glee fan so it doesn't really bother him. I had a look at the other Quinn threads and I have never heard of quim before so not sure if that would be a problem in our area.

It is really growing on me, nice and simple - I do like Finn too but there are lots around here. I also like Zach but DH not overly keen

Not a massive fan of Quinn, sorry. Would see it more of a surname.
Finn I do like though - or Finlay.

Love Zach too (though would spell it Zak).

I love the name Quinn, i also like Finn and Flynn

I love Quinn and know two, one aged five and the other 6 months - both are gorgeous boys so I'm slightly biased. Makes a lovely alternative to Finn imo.

Love Quinn. Sounds very masculine to me - cool and short.

I really like Quinn. Definately a boys' name. Makes a nice alternative to the overused Finn. Good luck with the birth!

Nigella - thanks for that really useful comment, I think you'll find that the word quim also means vagina - as I'm actually considering the name Quinn I don't really see what the problem is.

Thanks everyone else for positive comments, Quinn is definitely a front runner.

NB have to say OP, that the only Quinn I know of is from Glee and a girl.

I think you'll find that the letter M can sound quite similar to the letter N. Yes Quinn is a nice name but with a double N at the end it can look like an M. Teenage boys can be cruel - I would rethink.

I know a teenage Quinn (my nephew) who has never ever heard of or been teased with quim - maybe it is regional as I've never heard of it either .

One of my DS's best friends is a Quinn. Not been a problem so far. I think it's lovely! His brother is Oran, by the way, which is more unusual but just as nice.

Quim isn't regional and it's not in common spoken useage - more from literature and awareness in the minds of people over 40 or 50 - so hardly going to be the cause of childhood teasing (unless the teenage boys start familiarising themselves with dictionaries). It will cause surprise or mild shock to some older / well read people, who are the least likely to say anything.

I don't understand the view that because you don't know a word your child will never mix with anyone who does.
