I like Arianna, but not Ari. I know a few (Jewish) guys called Ari and so I think of it as a man's name..maybe Aria or Anna?

KateShmate · 19/12/2011 21:18

I love it, but Im slightly biased as its one of my DD's middle names.

IMO, you shouldnt pick a name for the NN - unless you plan to call her that all the time? (My DD is Indianna but always been an Indie and doesnt even respond to Indianna!)
In my experience, different members of the family will come up with different nicknames anyway - your mum may call her Aria, your PIL's - Anna and yours/DP's siblings Ari.
But anyway, there are loads of NN's to get out of Arianna, and its a gorgeous name

My daughter has a friend called Ari (Ariana) who's 2 1/2. Lovely name. Her mum named her after a friend of hers (in her 30's). Ariana and Arianna are both quite popular in Australia.

lovely name.. My dds middle name is Orianna so very similar.. Sometimes wish I had used this for her first name.

Ariana is the name of Professor Dumbledore's sister in Harry Potter. Different spelling, but the same name. Personally though, for me thats a reason to use the name :P and its not really that well known unless you're a HP nerd like me :)

It's a bit American. In the same vein as Brianna, Madison, Casey etc.

GlaikitFizzEggNog · 23/12/2011 00:50

Love it I would click the like button but I've hidden it :o

Grin at Katie, I would never turn round for my full name either.
I was called it occasionally if I was very naughty as a small child else it was never used at home.
The only people I never dared to train were the deputy head and my favourite great aunt. She died as I was doing my A 'levels. So I haven't been called by my full name for 26 years.

It's not American! It's from Ariadne, Greek mythology, and is very European in its various forms.
