Between final 2 choices for a girls name

Fresh01 · 18/12/2011 13:31

Baby due in less than a week - sex unknown. Narrowed the girls names down to a choice between two but can't decide on which one....

Lily Catherine

or

Mary Catherine

Catherine is a family name hence wanting to keep it as a middle name. So what do you think Lily or Mary?

Mary. No contest.

ThatsNotSantasBabyBelly · 18/12/2011 20:19

Mary

birdofthenorth · 18/12/2011 20:19

Mary!

seeker · 18/12/2011 20:21

Mary.

LynetteScavo · 18/12/2011 20:22

Lilly.

frankietwospots · 18/12/2011 20:24

Lily gets my vote.

Liz79 · 18/12/2011 20:27

Catherine Mary?

cece · 18/12/2011 20:27

Mary

exoticfruits · 18/12/2011 20:50

Mary Catherine.

manicinsomniac · 18/12/2011 21:00

I like them both, although I didn't think I liked Mary till I read it in this thread and repeated it over and over to myself - weird!

If popularity helps you make a decision:
2010 Stats:
Lily rank 4 4257 babies
Mary rank 213 237 babies

Those 237 Marys might also include Catholics who sometimes give the firstname Mary by defaultbut never use it. I don't know how the stats are worked out

ImpYCelynAndTheIvy · 18/12/2011 21:13

Mary, love it.

Lily is everywhere.

Fresh01 · 18/12/2011 21:22

Wow, Mary gets the most votes : )

I know several little Lily's which is what has made me less keen on it but it was the name DH was beginning to rank first. This is DC4 and Mary has been on the lists since DC2. DC3 was a boy so not suitable for him : )

Now if it would just come this side of X-mas.......

Mary yes it's corny in December. So is the Hollie in DDs class, but somehow it suits her.

emmyloo2 · 18/12/2011 21:52

Mary for sure. Lily was in the top five names here in Oz. Everywhere.
Mary is lovely.

PercyFilth · 18/12/2011 22:05

I don't see Mary as being "corny in December". If we are referring to Mary the mother of Jesus, she was his mother all year round :o

3isamagicnumber · 19/12/2011 13:50

Lily is nicer IMHO but alot more common than Mary.
Mary at Christmas time though?? Not sure...

thatgirlsevil · 19/12/2011 14:21

I prefer Mary.

My name is Catherine and it's been shortened to Kay ever since I was born. My Dad was insistent on me taking Mothers name as I was the last DC, Mum not so keen...so Kay was a compromise.

I find it slightly annoying really as Catherine is lovely and elegant and Kay is...well, a bit shit.

nizlopi · 19/12/2011 15:37

Mary, but only because Lily is so common these days

boyfallingoutofthesky · 19/12/2011 20:20

Definitely Mary - Lily is nice but very very popular, in fact if you combine all the different spellings it is probably the number 1 girls name. I don't think Mary is too cheesy for a Christmas baby (look at the nimber of Hollies born this time of year!)

Plonker · 19/12/2011 20:23

Definitely Mary.

No contest!

Jules722 · 19/12/2011 20:30

I prefer Mary but agree it has a very common Christmas connotation. I like the name Noel for a Christmas baby.

But truly you can't go wrong with either! I like the idea of having two names and choosing once you hold your baby girl for the first time to see what suits her.

ChineapplePunk · 19/12/2011 23:20

I like Mary Catherine, however I'll admit I'm slightly biased because it happens to be my name. :)

3boysgirlontheway · 20/12/2011 11:59

I prefer Mary, it is a forgotten classic really.

Letchlady · 20/12/2011 17:03

Mary.
Lily is ubiquitous and well, yawn. There's just too many around.
Mary is a much nicer name anyhow.

oikopolis · 20/12/2011 17:19

Mary is vastly underrated and underused these days, and it's a shame because it's both beautiful and traditional. Mary Catherine is exquisite.
