Three syllabel Girls Names - with nice shortening

I'm not bothered by popularity. I have a popular name and I like it.

I love the names Isabel, Olivia, Amelia, but would not use as I'd run the risk of Izzy, Livvie or Milly. I don't like the ie or y ending.

I like a classic strong name.

I have a lot of name associations, so although nice names, I would not use Annabel, Verity, Catherine, Christina, Susannah or Violet. I just can't get past the people I know with these names. Silly I know.

Certain names that trend on here, such as Allegra, I consider too posh, and it doesn't fit with common DH and I.

Hope I have not offended everyone.

So far we have one name:

Helena

Any other suggestions?

Pandora - but what about Pandora's box? It's too pretty a name for me and DH, although I did love Adrian Mole's Diary
Anoushka - pretty name, but posh
Samia - I think it's middle eastern. Nice name, but not us.
Alia - not us
Nicola - a nice name, but surely she would be Nicky. A bit 1970s-80s
Rhianna - love the popstar, can't get passed this association
Katia - a bit eastern european, and we're not, and I want it to match our identy. Also, I should own up. I'm a Katherine nn Kate. It's a fab name, but it does meant I can't use a few mentioned.
Marina - don't you moor your yacht in a marina?

Clarissa - love this name, DH vetoed it.

Wow some great names here...might steal a few Smile

May I make a suggestion shouldnotbehere......? I'd stop mentioning names to your DH. My DH just started staying No to every name I mention as he was fed up as me asking 'what do you think...' Give him a written down list of names you like, write them fully inc surname. Then leave him with the list for a day or two {then attack} Wink Wink Personally I found it helpful to write them out....this baby name business is tricky!

When are you due?

scarlettlips · 08/12/2011 11:45

As you put it, what makes your heart sing shouldnotbehere..you must have 1 name..1 tiny teeny secret name that you love that isn't 3 syllables?

shouldnotbehere · 08/12/2011 11:45

Percy Filth and Cheese and Marmite Sanwich - you got me. I'm impossible

Basically you want a name that noone you have ever met has had - well nobody I am close to, or has been unkind in any way, if that makes sense. I've met a Helena but she was very nice, and we're not close.

nobody famous or in the public eye - well nobody famous who I dislike. I like Helena Bonham-Carter, so Helena's okay. Not a fan of Imogen Thomas, so a no no. Not too famous though. Beyonce will forever be linked to the singer, in my mind.

a character in a book, right? - again depends on the book. Marianne, from Sense and Sensibility is acceptable. Helena from A Midsummer Night's Dream is fine. But nobody who I associate with tragedy, such as Ophelia. Also, I didn't care for Delilah in the bible. I liked Samson.

And not posh - DH is a welsh farmer, if I'm honest he doesn't like posh, and is a republican (royal family are biggest benefit scroungers in UK, as far as hes concerned). So anything he deems posh or pretentious, is out the window.

weird either? - Exactly. No names that I deem weird. There are rather a lot.

And not one that sounds made-up - Yes, that too.

Lauren - I like Lauren. It's been on and off the list. I think theres a Lauren in Towie (is that it), which although I've never watched it, I've seen her on some other programme, and wasnt impressed.

Eliza - this has been on and off the list, think it should go back on. I like it as a full name, but not shortened versions, if that makes sense.

Elise - I quite like this name, and I have a girl crush on Angelina Jolie, and she played Elise Ward in The Tourist. Not sure, will put it on the list, for time being

Meredith (I know you said no but it's my DD's name so I'm pushing it!) - and it's a beautiful name. Oh what the heck, I'll put it on the list.

Josephine - no to Josie as nn, but thank you

Luisa - DH ex was Louisa

Larissa - no, it's not as nice as Clarissa, and DH would not let me have this name.

Carys - love this name, not sure it goes with surname. We start with an s in surname, and they run into each other.

Honor - ooh, I always liked Honor Blackman. Maybe, quite like, it's a grower. Would I have to correct the pronounciatiopn much

Cassandra - I like this name, and I like Cassandra in Only Fools and Horses. Also Jane Austen's sister was Cassandra. IT's GOING ON THE LIST.

Marisa - no, not working for me, but thank you.

Melinda - LOVE this name. No really I do. What would it be shortened to though, I don't like Mel or Linda? Always liked Melinda Messenger too, so goo connections

Adrienne - I don't tend to like girls versions of boys names, if this makes sense.

Anita - I did like Anita Dobson on Strictly, just doesn't make my heart singer. It's not soft enough, perhaps that's it.

^hohohoshedittant

I hope you're only planning one child op because I don't think there are going to be two names out there for you!^

We have our boys name - Huw - and I love it. Yes, one syllable, no L's, but LOVE LOVE LOVE it. I always like short masculine names for boys. I suspect I'm going to have a son, but DH won't let me find out. He's being all stubborn and insisting on waiting. Not that we've even had the first scan yet.

Geraldine - sorry, Peter Kay, spoilt the name for me.

Amandine - why not just Amanda (ruled out further up thred), it's just a bit poncy to me, but thank you
Celestine - a bit poncy, prefer Celest, which doesn't work with surname

Hilary - it's a 1950s name, and I think Hilary Clinton. I quite like Mrs Clinton, by the way, but the name doesn't work for me.

Nicolette - oooh I do like Nicoletter Sheridan, but not working for me, but thank you.

Bettina - nope, not working. A bit made up to my ears.

Joanna - like this name, but forever 1970s, but thank you.

Anneliese - I always think of this as a German name. I know a nice German lady with this name. I like it, but its not right for us.
