Well, I had plenty of ideas for a girl, but this little one is quite clearly going to be male!

We went on the Office of National Statistics website and looked at the top 100 names for every decade in the past 100 years. And once we had both eliminated the names of close family members, ex boyfriends, idiots we don't like, and names we just don't like the sound of (such as Kevin and Clive and so on) we only had about three left!!

We were left with
Alex/Alexander - I love this one
Max - he likes it, I'm not sure yet. Is it ok on its own or does it need a long name?
Ben - I like Ben, but am not sure that I like Benjamin. Already have a cousin called Benedict so that is out as an alternative.

Any ideas?

Alexander is very nice. Also like Max, and personally would use a longer form such as Maximus, Maximilian or Maxim.

If you like names with "x" in, how about Felix or Xavier?

bemybebe · 06/12/2011 18:09

As AM pointed out Max is a nn. My favourite is Maxim

Clarajinglebumps · 06/12/2011 18:09

I love Alexander- so much my ds2 is called it..Grin we call him Sandy (for now)
I like Maxim as it reminds me of Rebecca..however also of that magazine. Max is lovely!

KatAndKit · 06/12/2011 18:12

Oh we can't go with Maximus! We did joke about that, but I love the film Gladiator and people will rib me non stop and ask if the middle names are Decimus and Meridius! Maxim is a good suggestion though, that can go on the shortlist I think. He does not like Maximilian. Although has not provided any justification for this.

I ruled out Felix due to cat food of same name. Xavier would be immediately ruled out by my partner due to non-Englishness.

I have an Alex (actually Alexander just to give him the choice, but he hates it). Teenage, puberty-ridden little shit, but apparently loved by everyone.

Collision · 06/12/2011 18:19

My eldest is Max and he loves his name!

Short and to the point and not many around.

He is just Max.........not keen on the longer versions though Maxim would be my choice.

tiredteddy · 06/12/2011 19:25

I'm going to agree with collision.
My eldest is also Max, just max and I am really glad I didn't use a longer name nor the sake of it. It is a good strong name and we get a lot of compliments. We come from a family where your name is what you are called and there is no point in a long name on a birth certificate if it will never be used. E.g I am Katie not any form of Catherine, my DSis is Alix not Alexandra, my DS1 is Max not maxim, maximus or Maximillian and DS2 is Toby not Tobias.
They are not nn's they are names.

Be brave - scroll down the ONS list and you'll find some corkers!

Future DS's name is hovering round the 1000 mark and it's a beaut

rachel234 · 06/12/2011 20:05

Why are just looking at the top 100 names - the best ones are way beyond that. My ds's name was number 1390 or so last year Grin.

jellybeans · 06/12/2011 23:15

Alex/Alexander - LIKE but very popular
Max - LOVE it. It's fine on its own.
Ben - LIKE. I don't like Benjamin though.

culturevulture · 06/12/2011 23:20

agree with Rachel234 - look beyond the top 100

All your choices are perfectly fine though, I like Ben slightly more than the others
