My absolute favourite girls name. It's got a nice associations for me (of a good friend, and a nod to a much loved Great Aunt) but... the Explorer?

Thoughts?

Love it.

MuddlingThroughItAll · 03/12/2011 19:28

sorry, but it's the explorer! It's a shame as it is a lovely name.

birdofthenorth · 03/12/2011 20:13

Love it. Yes, The Explorer, but surely you'd only think that the first time? And only more so than Thomas... The Tank because it's less common. After the first association it's just a simple, sweet, retro name I think. You could use Dorothy or Theodora on the bc if you want options, or consider Cora instead... but I really like just Dora.

TysTheSeasonToBeJolly · 03/12/2011 20:14

I really like it and wouldnt worry about the explorer part.

LaurieFairyCake · 03/12/2011 20:16

Nope, I'd think that all the time.

It only goes with 'the explorer'. Lovely name, ruined.

AnotherMincepie · 03/12/2011 20:39

Great name. I did think "Explorer" but that's not a negative point - she's a good character, it's not as if she's a villain!

ThatsNotMyBabyBelly · 03/12/2011 20:40

I love it - wanted Isadora nn Dora for dd2 but vetoed by DH

Fab name

EskimoPie · 03/12/2011 20:42

Cute name, despite the explorer (I know nothing about her!) and Dick and Dora, learn to read books in Australia which were being phased out in the mid-70s.
A friend had a Dora recently and it seems perfect!

Don't do it! Not comparable to Thomas the Tank Engine as Thomas is a way more popular name...is this your first child? I really think you will regret it if you go with it as the only association most (obviously not all) people will have is "Dora the Explorer"...am also surprised as to everyone's comments on the name as I think it is horrible (sorry - obviously just have different tastes to you and you'd probably dislike my name choices!)...but I also don't like Cora or Nora...

mapleleafmay · 05/12/2011 10:16

Lovely name! The Explorer link doesn't ruin it for me personally.

savoycabbage · 05/12/2011 10:21

Do it. You will soon just associate it with your dd.

Just say 'ohhh, I've never even heard of it' when people ask.

nocluenoclueatall · 05/12/2011 21:16

Thanks everyone.

Montsi, this is my second child. Hence the worries about Explorers. DS one has a Dora the Explora book, which he loves, despite it being the single most irritating item my husband's had the misfortune to bring home for him.

It hasn't ruined the name for me at all, I still love it, but if the expected DC2 turns out to be a girl, I don't want to saddle her with annoyance for the rest of her life.
