Dominic - reassurance please

DS is 8 weeks old and we named him Dominic. I like his name but don't love it in the same way I do about my DD's name, and am not fond of Dom as a nickname. Please help reassure me that I've done the right thing...

For background: we wanted a timeless, classy but not too popular boy's name that also sounds good multi-lingually. Whilst I still feel Dominic fits the bill, I can't help feel some pangs of regret for not going with my first choice - Alexander. We didn't go for this as my DH felt it was too close to his name (Alistair) and that Alexander has become too popular.

Can anyone suggest some good nicknames for Dominic that aren't Dom (or Nick)?

Personally I think Dominic is far nicer than Alexander.

Nicknames? Not Dom and not Nic? Nope can't think of any sorry.

Dominic is a lovely name.
A nickname doesn't have to stem from him first name. It could be initials, middle name, surname or totally unrelated.

I think it's really lovely and was on my list for both DDs. Maybe it's simply that it's a big name for a tiny baby and he will grow into it? I also love the nn Dom but agree that a nn doesn't have to directly relate to the given name.

I think Dominic is a really great name! Not too common but not 'unusual'.
Very strong name but an interesting one as well. I really like it. Good choice :)

SOOOO many little ones these days are called alexander so i think you definitely chose well.

Maybe you're struggling to 'love' it as it's quite a grown up name for a baby. Do you like Nicky? DimDom? Dommy? D? Or as bagel said try something which isn't to do with his name? My DS has a nickname which is nothing to do with his name, it kind of just came about when i was singing songs to him as a newborn.

I do think if you really don't like Dom you should come up with an alternative yourself or he'll naturally get called Dom.

If you REALLY don't like it then change it...... better to do it now than regret it!!!

Dominic is a great name but there aren't really any nicknames that aren't Dom.

MamaLazarou · 30/11/2011 14:51

Dominic is a lovely name. It does seem very odd to me that you like Dominic but not Dom! I'm sure you'll come up with a nice nickname for him in time, these things tend to be organic and pre-planning nicknames doesn't always work.

iloveberries · 30/11/2011 14:55

Nico's nice lockets

Montsti · 30/11/2011 15:39

I really like it and think you made the right choice. Also love Nico!

ajandjjmum · 30/11/2011 15:46

I love Dominic but am not too fond of Dom - but he'll grow into his name and you'll learn to love Dom too!

GwendolineMaryLacedwithBrandy · 30/11/2011 15:47

Love it. Is a strong contender if dd2 turns out to be ds1

WentworthMillerMad · 30/11/2011 17:02

LOVE Dominic. Reminds me of Domonic west from the wire who is so handsome! Good choice
