Girls Names

Can anyone please help?
My husband is definite on the name if our baby is a boy but we can't decide on a girl's name. I thought I had the name sorted until a couple of weeks ago when I heard a really posh lady use the name in a really contrasending (sp) way and then followed it up with the nickname that I don't like.

Anyway I'm getting to the point - honest!

I need help on a girl name please, but I don't like names that can be shorten. e.g. I don't want Emma as it too easily becomes Em. Has anyone got any ideas for names please that don't shorten naturally iyswim

Can you give an idea on the sort of names you like? What's the boys name you've chosen.

It's a bit tricky, as nearly all names can be shortened, or indeed lengthened (eg Jane to Janey). Using the version you want in use will help maximise the chances of the usage you want.

And here are some ideas of names which don't shorten easily:

Joy, Faith, Hope, May, Amy, Darcey, Agnes, Mary, Belle, Hannah, Sophie, Petra, Yvette, Adele, Chloe, Zoe, Thea, Polly.

Thanks. I don't mind on the name really. The boys name is most likely to be Phillip after my late FIL. But as my FIL was Phil then baby will hopefully be Phillip.

My cousin is David and by family only ever gets David it is odd when he is with his girlfriend as she calls him Dave. So I know there is nothing we can do when they are grown up enough to say what name they want to use.

The girl's name I had chosen was Tabitha but I hate Tabby, if that helps

FWIW everything can be shortened - but I know what you mean - I have an Esme who we often call 'ezzy' but when my mil calls her 'ez' it makes my teeth itch!!

The only names I can't think how to shorten is Isla (a younger DC may say la la) or Erin errie??

Every name can be shortened, even a one-syllable name can be reduced to an initial.

Unless it begins with W, in which case the initlial may be longer

I think the trouble is all names can be shortened, lengthened or changed so I would just go for a name I like TBH.

If you are polite but insistent when people use the 'wrong' version then they get the message pretty quickly.

My DC2 is known by the shortened version of his birth certificate name but we always intended that. People only need to be told once that that is what his name is. No one has ever used the longer version unless he is in trouble!

My DC3 has a shortened version of a name as his birth certificate name. People frequently lengthen it to the longer version! Once it is pointed out politely that this is not his name then there is usually no problem.

My DD has one of the names suggested here and yes that gets adapted too! LOL
