There is something a bit wrong with all the names I like... Help!

Milena (Mirena/Malaena)

Greta (is it pronounced GrEta or GrEEta? I say the former. Don't really want confusions over pronunciation, if possible)

Helena (again, is it HelEna or HelAyna. I say the former but...)

Lousia (OK but a lot of similar letters to DDs name and is it really OK to have 'Lou' as a NN?!)

Am I being too silly worrying about pronunciation. Does it matter? I mean, people would know once they knew, wouldn't they... ?

Mmm not keen on any really.

How about

Gabrielle
Imogen
Romilly
Bronte
Tegan
Sophia
Annabel

But Lou is fine for Louisa tho Lulu is cuter.
I would say HelAYna.
Greta is a bit naff but Grett-a
Milena - Just NO!

GwendolineMaryLacey · 24/11/2011 18:15

Helen-a definitely. Hel-ay-na is horrible. It's a gorgeous name though.

shrinkingnora · 24/11/2011 18:28

Iliana?

Staverton · 24/11/2011 18:30

I love Louisa
Tegan is hideous
How about marianne?

Staverton · 24/11/2011 18:31

Oh and I think Helen-a much nicer

Flowerface · 24/11/2011 18:45

I like Helen-a too. Does it matter that people would get it wrong...?

Umm melaena is also the name for a really nasty black poo that you get with bleeding stomach ulcers

In answer to your question, I think it's only mildly annoying when people pronounce your name wrong and tbh it will probably happen whatever name you choose (I am amazed at the variety of pronunciations and spellings of my own very common and easy 4 letter name!). Oh and Helena is a lovely name!

Catsycat · 24/11/2011 19:52

Helena and Greta are nice, and I am with you on the pronunciation.

Marinn · 24/11/2011 20:04

Well I was going to say Milena is very nice but now I have been educated on the word Malaena you really mustn't.

I wouldn't let pronunciation put you off. People will learn your preference, really no big deal.

I really like Greta, is very chic and I imagine most people will say it the Greta Garbo way.

LaTristesse · 24/11/2011 20:30

Louisa is gorgeous! And Lou is a great nn... Not keen on your other names though I'm afraid.

kindling · 24/11/2011 21:58

Helen-a and Gret-a are the standard pronunciations and are both lovely! Louisa too. Lou as a nn is ok. I know a 6yo Louisa whose nn is Lilou which is sweet.
