But something similar - i.e. a longer, more formal, name that can be shortened. Can you think of anything along these lines? Thank you!

Many thanks, some good ideas!
But can't go with Xander,sadly (Alex is nephew).
Sebastian - look away now Sebastian lovers, but I always think of fat little oily boys (sebaceous?) and don't like Seb, tho Bas is quite good.
Cass, Flo, Joe - don't want a gender ambiguous nickname (although irony noted in my suggestion of Alexander = Alex).
Mal - french for bad.
Xavier works well as Xav.
Stelios is interesting.

Some lovely names here, with thanks. Next question - can you think of any more 2 syllable names (Rubertbear has two e.g.s) - but that don't end in an 'es/as' sound or an 'er or ah' sound? Thanks!

For the longer name how about Dominic or Sebastian? Love these too!
