Hiya I'm not sure what I'm having yet and have about a million girls names but need to start thinking of boys. Came across Mason or Maison the other day and really like it. I like it Spelt with the I but not sure if that makes it a bit feminine?

What does everyone think of the name and which spelling do u prefer?

Also any ideas for a middle name?
I kinda like Maison James or Maison Jay (after my little brother) but all ideas welcome xx

Maison? Why would the french word for house be a good name for a boy?Confused

suppose Mason is ok - rugged stone-hewer vibes. Bit too surnamey for my liking TBH.

thesurgeonsmate · 03/11/2011 10:40

I've never come across Maison. Would you just say it "Mason?" If so, I'd thihnk Mason was the better choice! I'm into surnamey names, unlike Grimma so I think its a nice name for rugged stone-hewer vibes.

fraktious · 03/11/2011 10:41

I read that as maison the house. For the love of all that is holy don't do it.

Mason is okay I suppose.

Am am also not keen on surname-sounding first names (not as bad for boys though), however that is just a matter of opinion. That aside when I hear the word "Maison" I immediately think "house" in French - I didn't know it was a name..I would also pronounce it with a "z" sound therefore "Maizon" which does sound more feminine than Mason.

Mason. Maison is beyond silly.

i agree with GML. Maison isn't a name, its the french word for house. I'm all for being imaginative and liberal with naming your child but that's just silly. soz.

Towndon · 03/11/2011 11:34

Mason is OK, but I'm not keen surnames as first names.

Maison - agree that a lot of people will think "French for house" straight away.

tammytoby · 03/11/2011 11:57

Mason is nicer. Mason James or Mason Jay both sound good together.

BarryShitpeas · 03/11/2011 11:59

IT IS A SURNAME.

pilates · 03/11/2011 12:00

Sorry don't like either

sonniebonnie · 03/11/2011 12:03

But many surnames are now used as first names - that wouldn't bother me personally. Let's increase the name diversity, makes life more interesting.

But I agree that Mason is the only viable option, as Maison is French for house. I think Mason James sounds fine.

KeepingUpWithTheCojones · 03/11/2011 12:08

I like it. But Mason is the only way you could spell it to get the right pronunciation. Everyone who's ever been forced into basic french lesson will pronounce 'Maison' Maizon. And giggle.

GrimmaTheNome · 03/11/2011 12:12

'Mason' and 'James' sound great together the other way round Grin

anonymousbird · 03/11/2011 12:14

Mason is at least a name, though a pretty dreadful one.

Maison is not a name. It is a house in French.

OriginalPoster · 03/11/2011 12:17

Mason+James= Jason?

Grin

Don't use Maison, he'll spend days of his life explaining how it is pronounced like Jason...

PattySimcox · 03/11/2011 12:17

I have to agree with them ^ sorry

FreckledLeopard · 03/11/2011 12:17

Mason if you must - but it reminds me of Kourtney Kardashian's son - blingy and a 'made-up' name, rather than a 'proper' one. But then again, I'm snobby about these things.

Definitely not 'Maison' - why would you call your child after the French word for a house?

savoycabbage · 03/11/2011 12:20

I know a Chevelle. That would go a treat with Maison.

Chandon · 03/11/2011 12:23

Imagine meeting a French boy who said his name was "House Duchamps". you'd say "House?!". mais oui, je m' apelle House.

Ludicrous.

Sorry.

Although I guess when he is small and cute you could call him Maisonette

MrsJohnDeere · 03/11/2011 12:26

Sorry, first thought was why would you call a child 'house'? Not keen on Mason either but I'm a bit of an old fuddy duddy with names.

DunRovin · 03/11/2011 12:26

LOL at Maisonette Grin

Theala · 03/11/2011 12:27

Or Bungalow.

HappyCamel · 03/11/2011 12:27

Maison is a French house
Mason is a craftsman with stone (which is how it came to be a surname)

How about Jason?

limitedperiodonly · 03/11/2011 12:27

Maison + Surname would be excellent if he ever wanted to open a boutique for middle-aged ladies in Cirencester.

Does this fit with your ambitions for your son?
