How do you pronounce Nuala?

JudyR · 18/10/2011 07:29

I think it looks pretty but not sure how to say it:

Noo-arla
New-arla
Nwarla
Noo-allah
New-allah

Or another way?? Don't want a DD whose name I can't pronounce properly. That said, not sure it's a good idea to have a name that may cause so many pronunciation problems full stop [hconfused]

Many thanks!

Nu - la

As in the Lion King??

fivegomadindorset · 18/10/2011 07:31

Noo-la

PIMSoclock · 18/10/2011 07:32

Nu-la
(nu as is in shoe)

TanteRose · 18/10/2011 07:34

Nu-la, as in the traditional Irish girls name...

JudyR · 18/10/2011 07:34

Oh right! That option hadn't even occurred to me (not seen the Lion King).

Thank you!

Not sure if I would say its an option - Nu-la is the only correct way to pronounce the name Nuala...

JudyR · 18/10/2011 07:55

Sorry Tante - quite agree - I meant that that way to pronounce the name hadn't occurred to me, rather than it's just one of many ways to say it. Had no idea that it was a traditional Irish name.

The one in the Lion King is Nala, isn't it?

Agree Nuala is pronounced Noo-la.

wigglesrock · 18/10/2011 09:03

Noo to rhyme with boo la.

BunnyLebowski · 18/10/2011 09:05

Definitely not like the Lion King character. That's Nala.

Nuala is pronounced Noo-la.

Plus what Tante said.

MadameCastafiore · 18/10/2011 09:05

New la, surely??

Not Noo or there would be no u in it.

GooseyLoosey · 18/10/2011 09:07

Noo la

RitaMorgan · 18/10/2011 09:08

Noo-la, short for Fionnuala.

twittertotter · 18/10/2011 09:12

it is shortened version of Fionnuala.

It is pronounced Noo-la.

BunnyLebowski · 18/10/2011 09:17

Nope Madame it's definitely Noo-la.

It's an Irish name. I'm Irish. It's a fairly common name where I grew up.

Fixture · 18/10/2011 09:19

Noo-la

thisisyesterday · 18/10/2011 09:28

it's Noo-la

my general rule of thumb for choosing names was never to pick something I couldn't pronounce lol

lesstalkmoreaction · 18/10/2011 09:29

New-la not noo-la

RitaMorgan · 18/10/2011 09:31

Are you sure lesstalk? Have never heard New-la.

wigglesrock · 18/10/2011 09:34

I've never heard of Newla either, first syllable rhymes with boo. Am in NI, I know someone just had a baby called this - they just went for Nuala as opposed to Fionnuala.

GooseyLoosey · 18/10/2011 09:35

I know several Irish people with this name and unless I am missing some subtley, they all pronounce it Noo la.

SjuperWereWolef · 18/10/2011 09:40

I'd of said noo la

FessaEst · 18/10/2011 09:45

Noo La, definitely.
