Is Caleb too similar if SIL has a Callum?

To me they sound different & have different origins... but would not want to offend SIL & GP! DB wouldn't give two hoots, I suspect

I don't think SIL would have the right to be miffed about this one, however as I said on the other thread I steered away from Lucas because of Lewis - so in your position I would probably avoid it.

For me it was just as much that I wouldn't want to be 'stuck' with a similar name as not wanting to offending anyone else.

minipie · 04/10/2011 15:46

This is getting ridiculous! At this rate loads of names will be off the agenda due to some slight similarity with a relative's name.

I don't think they are similar at all.

Meteorite · 04/10/2011 16:06

I don't think they are particularly similar.

themightyskim · 04/10/2011 16:09

why not ask her? probably easier than worrying about it, I dont think they are too similar, not in the Eve/Eva way anyway :)

TryLikingClarity · 04/10/2011 18:41

I know a family with cousins called Stacey and Tracey.

And another family with cousins called Olivia and Oliver.

Neither seemed to have any issues with it.

OP, I think Caleb and Callum are different enough for it to not get misheard.

LynetteScavo · 04/10/2011 18:43

Caleb and Callum sound like brothers. Go well together, but not too similar.

Magnumwhite · 04/10/2011 18:43

very different names. one has Celtic origins and the other Hebrew origins. Both totally lovely names!

SlinkingOutsideInSocks · 04/10/2011 18:52

I don't think they're that similar, but would probably mention it to SIL.

HengshanRoad · 04/10/2011 19:27

They're as bad as each other!

BedHog · 04/10/2011 20:28

The 'Cal' part has different pronounciation anyway, so they don't sound similar.

QueenVictoria42 · 04/10/2011 20:43

They are different names, and as Bedhog says, the Cal part is pronounced differently for a start. I wouldn't be asking permission on this one.

poppydaisy · 04/10/2011 22:01

Why not ask your SIL directly?

tryingtoleave · 05/10/2011 04:55

Seems fine - all the really share is the initial.

iskra · 05/10/2011 08:20

Look more similar on paper I think - I wouldn't be concerned.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 05/10/2011 10:23

I wouldn't be asking either, like others have said, all they are really sharing is the initial.

Trills · 05/10/2011 10:35

Only if you are both planning to shorten to Cal.

Even then, do you lot all see your siblings and in-laws a lot?

rachel234 · 05/10/2011 11:46

I think that rather than asking us lot, why don't you talk to your brother and SIL directly? You can have an honest, open talk with them and will then know how they'd feel about it.

birdofthenorth · 05/10/2011 11:51

Good point all, if we do decide on Caleb & will ask SIL how she feels... athough that does breach my rule about NEVER discussing names in RL til the birth!
