Would you pronounce those names in the same way?

Which would you go for?

Thank you!

I would say Nee - ah for Nia and Nie - ah for Naia. I prefer Nia as it is a name I have heard of (welsh I think) whereas Naia looks a bit made up. Nia is lovely.

NorkyPies · 03/10/2011 21:27

Agree with mogandthecat.

ScorchioInnit · 03/10/2011 21:29

I do too. Nia (nee-ah) is pretty, whereas Naia (Nye-ah) is a bit awkward and well, a bit ugly sounding to me - sorry! Nia's great though. Yep, it's Welsh.

umiaisha · 03/10/2011 21:55

A lady I know has just had a girl called Nyla, which I think is lovely.

Baby is mixed - indian/white british

Meteorite · 03/10/2011 22:37

I'd say Nee-uh and Nay-uh.

Meteorite · 03/10/2011 22:38

I prefer Nia, by the way. Wouldn't go for Nyla, too similar to nylon.

ButtonMoonisinmysights · 03/10/2011 22:49

I thought Nyla sounded like Nylon too. Sorry about that, umiaisha.

I know someone called Ngaio (pronounced Ny-oh). It's a lovely name, I think. Maori origin.

ButtonMoonisinmysights · 03/10/2011 23:01

Thanks all. Nia's clearly a lot more liked than Naia (which nobody's liked), so thats good!

We have a Nyah. It's a varient on Nia and is swahili (Nia is also, as well as Welsh). Nyah means, 'purpose', which I love.

SlinkingOutsideInSocks · 04/10/2011 08:07

I know a toddler (Indian) Nilaya which I think is pretty.

greenzebra · 04/10/2011 08:52

I would have pronouced Naia as Nay- a but I can now see from the other posts that I got that wrong.

I work with a guy called Nye and I also went to school with a girl called Nala.

ShoutyHamster · 04/10/2011 09:51

Nia (Nee-ah) is lovely, Naia sounds a bit made up.

birdofthenorth · 04/10/2011 21:36

Nia is lovely

Rhubarbgarden · 04/10/2011 21:52

I know a Nia-Mia, which is such a ridiculous name it's put me off it's constituent parts, sorry.

MrsOzz · 04/10/2011 22:54

How would you like it pronounced? If it's to rhyme with Tire (as in car tire!) I think spelling it Nya.

If it's to rhyme with Bayer (as in Bayer crop science, wow I am bad at thinking up rhyming words!) then Naya or Naia. But neither look obvious. Plus I know a Maya who rhymes with tire.

Hmmm maybe Neigha as in horses Neigh! Sorry I'm not being much help here!

winkle2 · 04/10/2011 23:07

My niece is called Anaia, pronounced a-nay-a.

manicinsomniac · 05/10/2011 03:30

Going against the trend but don't really like Nia.

I know a lovely Nyah (wouldn't spell it Naia) so I may be biased.

GirlWithALlamaTattoo · 06/10/2011 09:40

Greenzebra, is your Nye short for Aneurin? Another Welsh and lovely one.
