Sorcha... pronunciations?

I know that for the most part this name is pronounced Sor-kha but I met a nice older lady years ago who was a Sor-sha - I do really like this name and it is top of the list for my new dc. What do you think?

I do also have two other dds with Irish names who's spellings have been Anglicised so I do have form for this....

I would pronounce it Sor-a-ka. It means sunshine in Gaelic.

my dog was Dorcha. Dor-a-ka which means darkness (he was black)

HTH

hmmm I like it with the sha! damn it!

As I said the other two dds have Irish names and people always always comment on how lovely their names are (along with my son's names too) so we should be ok.

I have never heard the name before and would have guessed sor-sha.

parentfailure · 11/09/2011 07:11

Can I ask what they are (the other names?)... I'm Irish myself so always interested!!

LtEveDallas · 11/09/2011 07:14

I used to work with one, and she was Sor-Sha. She was Scottish if that makes any difference.

JulesJules · 11/09/2011 07:15

I would say Sor-a-ka.

DialMforMummy · 11/09/2011 07:23

I know one and she is Sorka.

talkingnonsense · 11/09/2011 07:39

How about seiorse? I think I've spent it wrong but it is pronnounced seer- sha?

talkingnonsense · 11/09/2011 07:40

Or sasha/sacha?

pinkytheshrinky · 11/09/2011 07:41

NO I do want to avoid the spelt and said differently thing that happens with Gaelic names (pleb maybe but there it is)

Not a fan of sasha I am afraid (I am aware that this would solve the problem)

I have a friend who is Irish called this, she pronounces it Sor-sha

Cereal · 11/09/2011 15:59

I would have guessed Sor-sha.

somewherewest · 11/09/2011 17:39

I've only ever heard it pronounced sor-ka and I'm Irish. I wonder if its being confused with Saoirse (seer-sha).

RiotSpoon · 11/09/2011 17:44

I'm Irish! Its used as the Irish version of Sarah, and its pronounced Sor-Kha. Some people say Sor-sha, but the correct pronunciation is Sor-Kha

You could use Saoirse (Seer Sha) meaning freedom if you prefer

RitaMorgan · 11/09/2011 17:48

Sorka

I would assume someone pronouncing their name Sorsha was actually a Saoirse?

sqweegiebeckenheim · 11/09/2011 18:01

Sir -i - ka where I'm from

MrsHuxtable · 11/09/2011 18:16

I know a Sorcha and she's sor-sha.

HorseyGirl1 · 11/09/2011 21:59

I always thought it was Sor-sha too. There are always different pronounciations for the same names. I once knew a Nicola who pronounced it Nic coal a.

stleger · 11/09/2011 22:09

DD2's friend is a Sor-sha - in Cork.

lettinggo · 11/09/2011 23:07

I'm Irish and hate when the pronunciation of names are changed.

Sorcha is Sor-a-ka.

Why would you change it? It would be like naming a child Mary and pronouncing it Marie.

lettinggo · 11/09/2011 23:08

Forgot to add, in Irish the "ch" blend always makes a "k" sound in the middle of a word and anyone who pronounces it with a "sh" sound can't read Irish.

CointreauVersial · 11/09/2011 23:11

DD2 is Sor-sha, and she has an Irish daddy!

Lettinggo, apparently it depends where in Ireland you are from.

I know two others Sorchas in the UK, both are also Sor-sha.

Go for it! It's a lovely name, and is much commented on.

grumplestilskin · 11/09/2011 23:12

its sor-ah-ka, very irritation when people pronounce the ch "shh" or "ch", its K with a vowel sound after the r
