..and I mean anything (no matter how ridiculous, if there are bad connections, what others think or whether it sounds good with surname) what would it be?

I love the names Constantine and River for boys and Sonnet and Indigo but they are a bit 'out there' and would not work in RL!

So what would yours be? :o

If I have another DC (not for a few years!) it will be Aurora for a girl or Caspian/Alfie for a boy

Well yes you can, but for example would you name your child William if your surname was Williams?

You'd be surprised how common William Williams is actually - I just googled it for fun .

Okay, I do see what you're saying. I suppose in all your examples Lockets I would sum up by saying I didn't like the name because it didn't work. I wouldn't class it as liking a name but not being able to use it.

I think there are two types of names discussed on here. Firstly those that you'd love to use but don't work for you (as lockets said). Secondly, there are names that some of us deem to 'out there'.

And I think the first reason is easy to understand, while some feel that a lot of the 'too out there names' are actually quite nice and they would not hesitate to use them.

I think with the out there names it sometimes depends on where you live and what your family/friends are like as well as what you personally think of the name. Like, for eg, my thread on Hunter - I really like it, but think a) our family would hate it as they can be quite snobby and anti-American, b) it might not go down well with the parents of classmates where we live.

But if we had a more tolerant family and lived in a more mixed area where unusual names were more common neither of those things would be a factor.

It's normal in certain areas or the country/world to be X Xson and it is often maintained through many years.

Lots of William Williams THomas Thomas/Thompson s etc about if you look and don't forget Magnus Magnusson though Icelandic patronymical (is that right?) name so that's a cheat really

I like out there names but didn't give them to my children because it's them that has to live with them, it's them that has to spell them, it's them that has to be the one who feels a bit different. They may have very different tastes from me.

Gabriel has traditionally been shortened to Gay in Ireland (Gay Byrne is a well-known talk-show host, for instance).

My imaginary three sons are called Gabriel, Raphael, and errr....Tadhg.

My imaginary daughter is called Lili. My parents would probably kill me if I called an actual child Lili, however.

My DM wanted to call me Holly however my maiden name was Berry therefore they couldn't

My mother wanted to call me Isabella, until my brothers told her the IsabellaDoorKnocka joke once too often. :o
