Etta

...is it strong enough to stand alone as a given name, or does it work best as an abbreviation and would you give a longer, more formal name? The trouble is, I dont like most of them ending in Etta...ie

Henrietta
Loretta
Violetta (although love Violet)

What do you think, Etta as given name?

I love Etta. You might want to double check middle and surnames for unintentional punnage, mind. Etta Daisy, Etta Carpenter, Etta Kitty and Etta Gardner spring to mind.

Although, Etta Kitty is sort of awesome.

Etta? Depends....if your surname is Lott, Fox or Willey, don`t go there!!! lol

Annetta
Coletta
Georgetta
Julietta
Lunetta
Coretta
Marietta
Zanetta
Arletta
Carletta

I like it as a nn for Juliet or Henrietta. It is very nn for a given name imo. Although it is lovely!

freerangeeggs · 03/09/2011 17:02

It's nice but kind of reminds me of Basque separatists

ragged · 03/09/2011 17:03

Boring. There are just so much nicer names out there.

strawberrylion · 03/09/2011 19:29

Not one I've ever thought of but actually really like it, only association I can see is Etta James and that's no bad thing!

suzikettles · 03/09/2011 19:32

Etta James was born Jamesetta fwiw.

I like the name Edda which is Scandinavian - don't know how common.

MummysLittleSunbeams · 03/09/2011 20:06

Jamesetta James?? Hmm

suzikettles · 03/09/2011 20:09

No! Her surname wasn't James - it was Hawkins.

Don't know why she thought Etta James sounded better than Etta Hawkins. I guess it's the two syllable name followed by one syllable. I suspect she got little choice tbh.

seeker · 03/09/2011 20:13

I know a Guilietta, known as Etta.

suzikettles · 03/09/2011 20:13

Oh that's lovely.

MeconiumHappens · 04/09/2011 20:43

I think Etta is beautiful in its own right. I don't think I would lengthen it.

ThatsNotMyBabyBelly · 04/09/2011 21:15

It's Germanic isn't it?

I love it as a name on it's own. Def strong enough in my opinion.
