Heard this name today, and just wondered what the mumsnet verdict was...?

Like. Smile

mopsyflopsy · 29/08/2011 20:49

Fabian Society connection would put me off. Otherwise a nice name, as is Florian - both quite popular in Germany.

exexpat · 29/08/2011 20:59

I've known a few Fabians, mostly German or with German connections. I like it. But yes, in the UK a lot of people would think Fabian Society (not necessarily a negative, though - depends on your politics!).

Cereal · 29/08/2011 21:09

It's nice.

deepfriedcupcake · 29/08/2011 21:13

Yep, that's quite nice.

greenzebra · 29/08/2011 21:15

never heard of the Fabian Society what is it?

Love the name.

Knew a Florian from Germany aswell, good name too but prefer Fabian.

BustersOfDoom · 29/08/2011 21:34

Love it. My DS's friend from Uni is called Fabian. Don't think he has any German roots. He is mixed race with a fabulous afro and is a lovely young man.

DS also has a mate from Uni called Rameses. I just we had been brave enough to call DS Isambard! That's a fabulous name!!

Dexifehatz · 30/08/2011 17:14

Fabian was on my list if DD2 had been a boy.LOVE IT!

Imnotdarrellrivers · 30/08/2011 17:27

Fabian Society for that reason only it is wonderful!!!!!

greenzebra it was a socialist group set up the the 1880's. Had the Woolf's, Bernad Shaw and Wells where attached (Russell was for a bit)

Imnotdarrellrivers · 30/08/2011 17:35

sorry green got cut off

It later had Atlee as a member - it was one of the movements that laid the frame work for the Labour party (I'm positive Blair and Brown where at one time members) It is now a left think tank and a socialist society affiliated with the party. The young Fabians are also well known

confusedandsilly · 30/08/2011 17:43

how about Fabienne

birdofthenorth · 30/08/2011 17:52

Pros -great if you're leftwing and like big thinkers; unusual but pronouncable

Cons- posh; bit wet to my ears but I don't know why

HengshanRoad · 31/08/2011 06:51

Fabienne is a girl's name.

confusedandsilly · 31/08/2011 08:43

But Fabian is too, if she wants a boy's name she should call him Fabien as it is the correct spelling

minipie · 31/08/2011 11:02

I love Fabienne for a girl but not so keen on Fabien or Fabian for a boy - I think it's too associated with the Fabian society.

othersideofchannel · 31/08/2011 11:30

Fabian is a very popular boys' name in Germany. I know an American Fabian too. I think in the UK it is too closely linked to the Fabian society.

(Fabien is the French version of Fabian).

jordanna79 · 31/08/2011 16:36

Fabian is my fave boys name...but I'm not allowed it. DH says it sounds too wet sounding! I am Italian and Fabiano is a very popular name in Nortern Italy.

One thing that does put me off though is eveyone I have said Fabian to says, "Ooo I know a Fabien" I HATE FABIEN!!! Now that is a wet name so I think you should be aware of mispronounciation.

othersideofchannel · 31/08/2011 17:29

I don't think anyone (other than French) would mis-pronounce Fabian.
