Yep I know it's popular which I know everyone will day should put me off but it doesn't. Me and DH are struggling to name DT2. DT1 will be Joseph (not really after opinions on this, we are sorted and both love it). Just struggliing for something to go with it now but nothing starting with a J. So far the only ones we agree on are Charlie, Henry and Oliver which agin is HUGELY popular. So what do you think of Charlie?

Well I like it (far better than Charles)

Henry I like (goes with Joesph) But prefer Oliver by far.

So it's not too 'common' or nicknamey then? That's good. We have gone through so many boy's names lately that the other day DH suggested Hunter as a joke and I was seriously considering it .

Oooh never thought of the Cocaine connection there. Hmmm that may have put me off a bit.

I liked it until my teacher sister said it's a naughty boys name. Put me right off! I would choose Henry.

DD is Katherine if that helps anyone. So we will have a Katherine, a Joseph and a Henry/ Charlie/ Oliver??

all the charlies i know have been girls but its a lovely name and better than charles by a long chalk.

Oh a naughty boy name that's not good . I asked my brother in law also a teacher what names he hated because of children he'd taught and he said connor and Liam... no mention of Charlie! Silly reason not to like a name really though isn't it but it's amazing how things influence our decisions. We were really set on Henry until MIL rolled her eyes when we mentioned it. Wish we hadn't said anything!

I think he will spend his life explaining that it's not a nickname, but his full name. I think it's very cute for a toddler/small boy but Charles would look better on a CV. If you want Charlie, go with Charles for birth certificate and then use the nickname. Please remember your son will be an adult for a lot longer than he'll be a child.

that said, I think Henry is a much nicer name.

oh x post - go with Henry then, or you'll spend your life wishing you'd called him that. MIL will love her DGS regardless of what you call him.

You raise a good point about the nickname aspect of it but it's currently a top 4 name so I assumed by the time he was writing CVs then people would know that Charlie is a full given name and not judge him as a little boy as there will be thousands of grown up Charlies. That was my theory but you could well be right! I thought about Charlie growing up to be a brick layer whereas Henry would grow up to be a lawyer but is that foolish to think that way?? It's just a name but I see what you mean.

CHARLES. Charlie is a lovely nickname but the name is CHARLES.

I think the cutey type names (Alfie, Archie, Charlie) are going to start to date - they have become so popular recently.

we have a charlie (christened charles) and bizarrely he is the only one we know (and i am chair of the nct so know a lot of children!)...He is named after his great grandad who was always known as charlie and he was born in the early 20th century so i would say it is timeless!
